Be a Zombie

So what do zombies want? Brains.

At dinner the other night, I realized that I understood maybe 3 or 4 words for every 12-15 being said. It was that kind of "way up the ladder" talk that people who buy companies from other people use. And you know, after a while, you can translate it.

That's the idea for today. If you want any chance at surviving out there in the business world, you can just play the game you're on right now and stay where you are, OR you've gotta go after the brains and be a zombie.

Get Out of Your Damned Vertical

Look - if you're a marketer, stop reading marketing books (Sorry, my thousands of marketing friends). If you're in the automotive industry, go get some books about city planning for bicycles. If you write software, stop looking at the dudes in your company and go find someone writing something cool somewhere else. Or pick up some other platform you haven't talked about.

The zombie brains are NOT where you left them. We already ate those brains. You're on the hunt for new brains, bigger brains, way different brains that are around you.

Play With Your Food

And play with your food! Mash your brains with other people's brains as often as possible. So what that you know something. Go smoooshhhhh it against someone else's thing they know and make your things better. Set your stuff up so that other people can pick up YOUR brains and stuff them into their thing.

Zombies can also be cool when they try fusion cuisine. Have you ever been to one of those Mexican/Chinese restaurants? Like that. Only do it with your brains and your ideas. Let's say you're really good at figuring out project plans. What would happen if you got amazing at convincing people to follow your plans? HOW, though? That sounds like a tall order!

What if you gamified a project plan? An "escape room" project plan. Something.

Duuuuuuuuuuude. That's the thing, see?

I was writing a new version of a biography paragraph for my boss. After the first three (written like a normal-ish) person, I wrote a totally silly one. It's not worth sharing with you. But the one I wrote after that one, felt more "cracked open," looser than the first three. So because I mashed the idea of a biography with absurd writing, I got somewhere better.

Discard A LOT

Okay, here's another thing about being a zombie. There's not a lot to them. They shuffle around looking for brains. That's it. There aren't a lot of zombie airline pilots. Zombies don't worry about yachts. They just go looking for brains.

So throw away a lot of things. Stop trying to learn another language for no real reason. Stop volunteering for 13 projects a month. (A few is good.) Stop a lot of things. Throw plenty of stuff out. And just go be a zombie.

You feel me?

Chris...

One of my favorite quotes, and one I use a LOT with clients, is "what got you here, won't get you there." In other words, it takes different skills when one is looking to transition from a subject matter expert to a strategic asset. Strategic assets bring wisdom to the game. They bring the capacity for holistic thinking and the ability to quickly synthesize a wide variety of information. They’ve achieved mastery, which can be applied to learning new things. So immersing in -- or at least exploring -- different fields -- eating others' brains -- provides new information that can be applied to different circumstances.
