For Zomato, with Vogo?—?Indirect Use case generation

Recently, I had ordered lunch from Zomato. When I went to collect my meal outside my office I saw the delivery boy waiting on a scooter which was from Vogo Rentals. I got a little confused as I expected him to ride on a vehicle provided by Zomato so, to confirm I asked him if he is the one with my order and that was when the conversation began….

I asked him why was he riding a vogo scooter? He replied:

“Because it’s cheap. I just have to pay ?120- ?130 (INR) on an average to use it for approx 12 hours each day. With this I am able to earn 1400–1800 on weekdays and 2000–2200 on weekends by delivering multiple zomato orders each day”

I was interning then and I was paid 18,000 INR stipend which comes down to approximately 600 INR per day. I told the delivery boy about how much I earn and to that he laughed and replied:

“I am surprised and happy at the same time. Because you know what I don’t have a boss instructing me all the time what to do and how to do. All I have to do is just deliver orders”

It is evident that the delivery boy was smart. Why? Because…..

  1. He was aware of the scooter rental service
  2. He did all the math that renting scooter would be more profitable than buying one.
  3. He knew if he bought a scooter a lot of responsibilities and dependencies would come along like maintenance and fuel charges.

This is a classic example of why consumers don’t want to buy products and instead subscribe to them.

Generation of new use cases

Almost all products are designed with an intended use case. But it’s amazing when users themselves come up with interesting ways of using the product. The above example of Zomato and Vogo is not just a use case but also an indirect dependency of 2 startups on each other.

Another interesting example is google docs. Teens in schools are using google docs to chat and exchange notes. Read this article to know more.

I noticed a lot of people joining Telegram recently. To my surprise I came to know that most of friends in my circle were using it to download movies. Yes, you read it right!

  • Supergroups in telegram can have upto 100,000 members
  • Maximum size of shared files can be upto 1.5GB (Comapred to whatsapp -16MB, that’s alot!!)

It can be rightly said that a product is good to go when it’s users themselves are generating new use cases for the product!

Very interesting observation ! I have noticed the same phenomenon occurring in Hyderabad too. The only additional observation being that I've noticed a cohort of delivery boys traveling across the city by using the city metro services as well. To service the hotspot locations, where the demand is high - depending on the time of the day. The bike for hire service's are strategically placed close to metro for the same reasons ( last mile connectivity ). It wouldn't be of much surprise if we start to observe an increase in bicycle messengers as well, giving much needed traction to the struggling shared economy.?
