Zolo Philippines: A Blend of Business, Purpose, and Heartfelt Moments
I'm currently in Manila, having just finished packing. Soon, I'll be heading to the airport for my flight back to Sydney. These past 4+ weeks in the Philippines have been intense and rewarding as I've been immersed in Zolo's expansion efforts in the Philippines.
So yes, very thrilled to share a monumental chapter in Zolo’s journey — we are officially painting Philippines berde. This is not just another business move, but a deeply personal endeavour and a significant stride towards addressing a critical global challenge.
Why The Philippines?
The answer lies in the mix of personal connection and a problem that needs to be solved. According to the UN Global E-waste Monitor report, the Philippines stands as a top e-waste producer in Southeast Asia, with approximately 3.9 kg of e-waste generated per capita. The ramifications of this statistic are not just numbers on a page; they pose genuine health, environmental, and climatic threats.
As of now, most businesses don’t capitalise on a secure and sustainable solution for disposing of their old tech in the country.
Our mission and values deeply resonate with the spirit of the Philippines. We both hold the conviction that technology can be a gateway to realising dreams. While Filipinos heavily rely on technology for work, creation, and seizing opportunities, not everyone has the financial means for access, given the prevailing economic conditions. This is where Zolo steps in. By introducing our circular approach and collaborating with Philippine brands, we aim to create a platform where technology is both accessible and affordable for all Filipinos… so that they have the tools necessary to chase and achieve their dreams.
Last but not the least, being of Filipino heritage, this issue hits close to home, making this expansion so much more than a strategic move. It's a heartfelt endeavour to provide businesses a sustainable disposal solution while also creating employment opportunities for my fellow Filipinos. We've just appointed a new head of sales & partnerships for Zolo PH. I'm excited to keep expanding the team and aim to build one with a championship pedigree.
My Personal Journey in this Expansion (feat. my mother)
These past four weeks in the Philippines have been nothing short of a roller coaster. While working on this expansion, I've been away from my team, my dog, and my partner, and it's been a journey paved with isolation.
But coincidentally, my mother travelled to the Philippines on vacation. To live under the same roof with her, and have her witness Zolo's steps forward was the emotional sustenance I needed. Her unwavering support fuelled my ambition, reminding me of why we undertake such challenges — to make our loved ones proud and to leave an impactful legacy.
Having my mother by my side during this expansion is the highlight of this entire trip.
Looking Ahead
With this expansion, Zolo's ambitions soar higher. We aim to partner with the Philippines' top brands and corporations, leading the charge in e-waste and tech recycling. Our overarching mission remains unwavering — to ensure people and humanity thrive by turning tech waste into positive impact.
As Zolo dives into this new chapter, we're not just expanding our footprint; we're amplifying our commitment to a sustainable future.
