As Zimbabwean journalism navigates the complexities of the digital age, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data presents both challenges and opportunities. To thrive in this evolving landscape, our media industry must adapt and innovate, leveraging these technologies to enhance storytelling and engage audiences effectively.
The Promise of AI in Zimbabwean Newsrooms ???
AI is already making waves in Zimbabwean journalism. For example, the Centre for Innovation and Technology (CITE) in Bulawayo recently introducing "Alice," an AI-generated newsreader, to improve news delivery and engage younger audiences. This initiative, implemented on May 7, 2023, has streamlined production processes and demonstrated the potential for AI to complement journalistic efforts, rather than replace them. However, the integration of AI is not without its hurdles. Linguistic limitations present a significant challenge, as current AI models often struggle to accurately pronounce local names and terms. This highlights the need for AI systems tailored to Zimbabwe's diverse linguistic landscape. Moreover, ethical concerns arise regarding the potential misuse of AI tools, underscoring the importance of training journalists in responsible AI usage. ??
Big Data: A Goldmine for Investigative Reporting ????
Big data offers immense potential for uncovering stories that matter to the Zimbabwean public. Despite the challenges posed by limited access to government data. Nonetheless, as of now, Zimbabwe lacks a comprehensive open data policy, which hinders journalists' ability to access and utilize valuable information. A survey conducted sometime ago found out that 80% of journalism graduates enter the workforce without training in data journalism. This gap in skills limits our ability to harness the wealth of data generated by various government ministries and other sources. For instance, while the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency ZIMSTAT collects extensive data, much of it remains inaccessible or outdated, as most data is still available periodically.
