There's a shakeup in the world of container shipping! ZIM, a major player listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has just overtaken Yang Ming to become the world's ninth largest container line by capacity. This significant shift comes thanks to the recent delivery of the ZIM Mount Vision, the 10th in a series of massive new vessels chartered by ZIM.
According to analysts at Linerlytica, this latest addition to ZIM's fleet pushes their overall capacity a whopping 714,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit). This growth spurt isn't a one-off event – ZIM has been on a major expansion tear, more than doubling in size since 2020! In fact, they're not done yet – with 19 more new ships scheduled to arrive before the end of the year, ZIM's dominance on the high seas seems poised to continue.
Meanwhile, Yang Ming, who held the number eight spot in 2020, has seen their growth trajectory take a more conservative path. This has allowed both HMM and now ZIM to surpass them in the global ranking. Currently, HMM sits comfortably at number eight with a capacity of 799,919 TEU, according to analyst firm Alphaliner.
