ZHAW Study Trip to Singpore - Visit to Maritime Authority and Port of Singapore
As one of the last visits of the one-week study trip, 25 students and alumni of ZHAW School of Management and Law visited the Maritime Port Authority (MPA) and the Port of Singapore (PSA) of Singapore. Captain Frederick Wu explained in a highly impressive manner, how PSA monitors and parks ships in the narrow deep water harbor around Singapore and its ports. A construction engineer explained how an international three-party-consortium builds a new world-class terminal with four fingerdocks at Tuas. The present port at Tanjong Pagar port will be relocated there to free up space for office and house construction near the city center. In order to build this new Tuas port, 4 times 227 concrete caissons, weighing 13'000 tons each (!) are produced on site and sunk into the sea in order to reclaim land equalling 335 soccer fields for the docks.
The operations of the second biggest container port (after Shanghai) was explained by the PSA communication officer, using models and interactive tools. PSA operates the world’s largest transhipment hub with unrivalled connectivity, facilitating container movements across the world.
This visit was planned and organised by students with Mario Stalder leading the student team.
