Danny Thomas, a Lebanese-American entertainer and celebrity, founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to find cures for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. To raise funds for the proposed research and treatment facility, Danny went on a nationwide campaign reaching out to fellow Americans of Arabic-speaking heritage, asking for their support in this landmark effort.
In 1957, at a meeting in Chicago, Danny and his supporters formed ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) with the sole purpose of raising the funds necessary to build St. Jude and then maintain it. Five years later, in 1962, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened its doors in Memphis, Tennessee.
Today, ALSAC continues to serve as the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude. ALSAC raises the funds necessary to support the lifesaving research and treatment at St. Jude and helps ensure that no family will ever receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
Pictured here is Alexander’s grandfather and Lorraine’s father, Minor George, handing Danny a check in Minor’s living room in Cleveland, Ohio in 1957. Minor was a real estate developer and leader in Northeast Ohio’s Lebanese- and Syrian-American communities, and most importantly, a dear friend to Danny. They travelled together across the U.S. and met with other community leaders to create awareness of Danny’s mission.
Minor was named a Founding Board Member of ALSAC, and his name is displayed at the Danny Thomas/ALSAC Pavilion on the campus of St. Jude.
In the spirit of “Hope and Heritage,” Alexander, Lorraine, and the entire Zesty Z team are proud to be recognized partners of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Every year, Zesty Z donates a percentage of its revenue to St. Jude in honor of Minor George, to continue the work he began alongside Danny in 1957.
