Zeroing In: Time to Double Down
In the words of US President Joe Biden at last year’s UN Climate Summit, COP27, "The climate crisis is about human security, economic security, environmental security, national security, and the very life of the planet ... It's more urgent than ever that we double down on our climate commitments.” ??
At the start of 2022, the scale of commitment towards #energytransition was stronger than ever before, with over 20% of the world’s largest 2,000 companies publicly committed to net zero targets. Upon this foundation, the global energy community sought to rebuild supply-chains following the Covid-19 pandemic, whilst the war in Ukraine, associated #energycrisis and mixed outcomes from COP27 created fresh market turbulence and posed new challenges for those navigating this most transformative period in modern history.
?? Throughout a busy year at Reuters Events in 2022, I witnessed first-hand the work that business leaders are doing to confront these challenges through the extensive first-party research conducted by our team, countless conversation at our returning in-person events as well as through our year-round digital business intelligence program. We unpacked the importance of collaboration and partnership for achieving collective goals, identified the business models, technology developments and investments needed to deliver success and explored the importance of a just and equitable transition. But there is work yet to do…
In a poll I ran at the end of 2022, over 50% of respondents felt that there had been at least some progress on energy transition. That said, worryingly, 32% felt that we are going backwards
As we reflect on the year ahead, I reflect on comments made by Frederic Godemel (EVP, Power Systems & Services, 施耐德电气 ) in an interview I held with him late last year. We the technologies, or 80% of the technologies, and what isn't available today isn't what we should act on in the foreseeable future. The return on investment on brining electric and digital is ever gathering pace. The piece that is missing is more friendly regulation towards prosumers, especially in Europe. It's way to slow, and we must accelerate! ?? You can check out the full interview here, held of the sidelines of Energy Transition Europe 2022.
