In the offshore oil and gas sector, maintaining safety in high-risk operations is both an art and a science. My role as a Rope Access Level-3 Supervisor, overseeing teams in critical offshore operations, has resulted in a remarkable milestone: achieving a 100% job completion rate with zero lost time injuries (LTI). This commitment to safety earned me the Certificate of Award for Safe and Reliable Operations Onboard the Agbami FPSO in 2020, presented during an extended operational period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The recognition, awarded by Chevron Management, reflects my dedication to fostering a culture of safety during one of the most challenging operational phases in recent memory. The extended stay onboard required meticulous planning, stringent adherence to safety protocols, and an unwavering focus on team morale. It exemplifies how a proactive approach to risk management and leadership ensures not just the completion of projects but the protection of lives.
Visual Testimony: A Moment of Recognition
This image, capturing the moment I was presented with the certificate, stands as a testament to the recognition of my leadership and safety management. The presentation symbolizes not only my commitment to operational excellence but also Chevron's trust and acknowledgment of my contributions during critical operations onboard the Agbami FPSO.
The Backbone of Zero-Injury Success: Training and Preparedness
The foundation of achieving zero injuries in high-risk environments begins with comprehensive and continuous training. My qualifications, including Rope Access Level-3 (IRATA), ASNT Level II in Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and OPITO Rigger Stage-2, are complemented by emergency response certifications such as Confined Space Entry (CSE) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S). These credentials are essential in preparing not just myself but my teams for handling the wide range of hazards encountered offshore.
Beyond certifications, I have made it a priority to ensure all team members receive on-the-job safety coaching. This includes creating a shared commitment to the “Think Safety” culture, where proactive hazard identification and mitigation are part of everyday operations. I conduct regular drills, briefings, and risk assessments that foster a mindset of vigilance and readiness, ensuring that no risk is overlooked and that all personnel understand their responsibilities in maintaining safety.

Rigorous Risk Assessment and Real-Time Problem Solving
Risk assessment is at the heart of my approach to safety. Every task, from offshore crane inspections to complex rigging and lifting operations, involves meticulous planning and a continuous assessment of risks. Each operation begins with a detailed hazard analysis, where potential dangers are identified and strategies are put in place to mitigate them.
For instance, when overseeing critical tasks such as the change-out of SBM Buoy Hoses or conducting manual ultrasonic testing on risers, I ensure that every step adheres to strict safety standards, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper rigging, and alignment with industry-approved lifting plans. This attention to detail ensures that even in the most complex operations, the safety of the team is never compromised.
Leadership and Safety Culture: Leading by Example
As a leader, I believe in leading by example. A significant part of my zero-injury success comes from fostering a safety culture where every team member feels accountable for their own well-being and the well-being of others. I also mentor junior technicians and engineers, guiding them on the importance of adhering to safety protocols and encouraging them to speak up if they observe unsafe conditions.
During high-risk operations, such as confined space rescues or offshore rigging, I actively participate, ensuring that all procedures are followed and that immediate corrective actions are taken when necessary. My approach is hands-on, and I work alongside my team to ensure that safety is prioritized at every stage of the operation.
Recognition and Accountability: A Proven Track Record
The results speak for themselves. Over the course of my career, I have consistently achieved 100% job completion without any recorded lost time injury (LTI). This achievement has not gone unnoticed—Chevron management recognized my efforts onboard the Agbami FPSO in 2020, awarding me a certificate for exceptional operations. This recognition further reinforces my belief that safety and operational excellence go hand in hand.
Conclusion
The journey to achieving zero-injury milestones in high-risk offshore operations demonstrates that strong safety culture, proactive risk management, and teamwork are essential in preventing accidents and ensuring operational success. My zero-injury record reflects the effectiveness of rigorous safety protocols, training, and leadership. My experience with Chevron Nigeria Limited and NiGSA Energy Services Limited highlights how safety excellence is attainable, even in the most challenging environments. If I can work safely to achieve this, you too can. "Do it safely or not at all. There’s always time to do it right."
