Zero-ing in on zero emissions medium-duty buses and trucks in Canada
Targeting the sales of fully electric buses and medium-duty trucks in Canada will help tackle greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and reach climate goals set in the Canadian government's 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan.?
The Pembina Institute calls out the transportation sector in Canada as the second largest source of greenhouse gas -- with medium- and heavy-duty trucks (MHDVs) sending emission trends in the wrong direction. If this trend continues, transportation emissions may be higher than passenger vehicles by 2030.
In their published report,?Canada’s Pathway to Net-Zero for Medium-and-Heavy-Duty-Trucks and Buses, Pembina recommends that to stay on target to meet 2030 greenhouse gas emission (GHGs) goals, Canada should focus first on electrifying buses and medium-duty vehicles, such as box trucks, due to it being the most economically advantageous option. They recommend that buses hit 100% zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales by 2030, with MDVs hitting 50% ZEV sales by 2030 and nearly 100% by 2040.?
These targets align with Canada’s signing of the Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero’s Memorandum of Understanding in 2021, where several countries have agreed to 100% ZEV sales for medium-duty trucks and buses by 2040.
