Zero in on Bus Safety this #NSBSW

This week is National School Bus Safety Week. The awareness effort, which started as a letter-writing campaign during the Nixon administration, has flourished into an impactful national movement that reminds us of the importance of school bus safety.??

The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) recently conducted their annual Stop Arm Survey to report motorists who passed stopped school buses.?The survey results show that throughout the 180-day school year, more than 41.8 million vehicles illegally passed school buses with their stop-arms extended. ?

That means thousands of motorists disregard these stop-arm laws every school day, unnecessarily putting children, bus drivers, and other motorists at risk. Vehicles illegally pass stopped school buses causing an estimated two-thirds of school bus loading and unloading fatalities.?

At Verra Mobility, our goal is to zero in on bus safety. We have been partnering with school districts of all sizes across the United States for more than a decade to employ technology solutions like CrossingGuard? to keep children safe as they go to and from school.??

Comparing the beginning of the school year in August 2021 to the end in May 2022, our CrossingGuard? school bus stop-arm safety programs experienced a 21% reduction in issued citations. At the same time, total citations issued per bus saw a 10% decrease during the same period. ?

All lead to the intended outcome: changing dangerous driving behaviors. Verra Mobility program data shows that 99% of drivers who received and paid a ticket for illegally passing a school bus did not receive a second.?

Verra Mobility is proud to partner with road safety champions like National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR). Together, we assembled a library of educational and actionable materials that others can use to raise awareness for this issue. ?

Check it out. Share with your networks. Join the parents and loved ones who need our collective effort and empathy to protect the safety of more than 25 million K-12 children who ride school buses daily.
