Zanzibar: The Island That Stole My Heart (But Let's Keep That Between Us)

If there’s one place on Earth that feels like an extension of my soul, it’s Zanzibar. This island—bathed in the warm glow of the Indian Ocean—has become a part of me, a place where my spirit feels at home. Now, before you tell my wife, I must admit: Zanzibar is the love of my life. But, of course, she comes first!
A Love Affair with Zanzibar
Zanzibar isn’t just a destination; it’s a feeling, a rhythm that syncs with my heartbeat. It’s where I find peace, where the stresses of life fade into the background, and where I reconnect with what truly matters. Every time I set foot on this enchanting island, it’s like a gentle whisper telling me, “You belong here.”
My love for Zanzibar is indescribable. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit this breathtaking spice island countless times, and I know I’ll continue to return, each visit rekindling that deep affection.
Why Zanzibar Captivates Me
Zanzibar is a sanctuary for the soul. There’s a certain tranquility here, a serenity that’s hard to find anywhere else. The pristine beaches, where the waves kiss the shore in a soothing lullaby, the sway of the palms in the ocean breeze, and the vibrant culture—it all blends into a perfect symphony of peace. And then, there’s Forodhani Gardens, where the scent of spices and the sizzle of street food vendors fill the air. Every bite, every flavor, is a reminder of why I love this place.
A Highlight Among Highlights
Of all my experiences in Zanzibar, one that stands out is the team-building activity I organized in Stone Town—a thrilling crossover of a treasure hunt and an amazing race. Picture this: participants racing through the narrow, winding streets of Stone Town, piecing together clues, answering questions about its rich history, and immersing themselves in its culture—all against the clock. The excitement, the laughter, the camaraderie—it was an adventure that left an indelible mark on everyone involved. We first did this for our BCD partners and then for the YPO a few years later, and both times, it was nothing short of spectacular.
But Zanzibar isn’t just about relaxation; it’s also about exhilaration. One of the most unforgettable experiences of my life was skydiving over this island. The rush of adrenaline, the breathtaking views of the island from above—it was as if time stood still, and I was suspended between the sky and the sea, soaking in the beauty of Zanzibar in a way I never thought possible. It was pure, unfiltered magic.
The Perks and Privileges
Being in the travel industry has its perks, and Zanzibar has always been my favorite destination to indulge in them. I’ve had the privilege of staying in some of the island’s most exquisite resorts, sometimes at rebated rates (a little perk of the trade!), but often on paid trips with friends and family. Whether I’m organizing group travel, hosting events, or attending workshops and conferences, Zanzibar never ceases to amaze me with its charm and hospitality.

The Resorts That Won My Heart
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to stay at some truly remarkable resorts in Zanzibar. Each one has added a different flavor to my love affair with this island. Here are a few that have left a lasting impression on me:
Melia Zanzibar, The Residence, The Mora, La Gemma Dell Est' & Hideaway of Nungwi, Neptune Pwani, Park Hyatt Zanzibar, Serena Zanzibar, Tui Blue Bahari, Blue Bay Beach Resort & Spa, Gold Zanzibar, Sea Cliff Resort & Spa Zanzibar, LUX Marijani Resort
Each resort has offered a unique experience, contributing to my deep-rooted love for Zanzibar.
And, of course, there are a few more resorts I haven’t had the chance to visit yet, but they’re definitely on my list. Zanzibar’s hospitality scene is ever-evolving, and I’m determined to do my part in keeping up—someone’s got to make sure all those sun loungers are up to scratch, right? :)
Notable Mentions - My Favorite Spots
Beyond the resorts, there are a few spots in Zanzibar that have carved out a special place in my heart:
Exploring the alleyways of Stone Town is a ritual for me—getting lost in its history, trying the local "Zanzibar Mix / Urojo" with mishkaki (meat on skewers), and washing it all down with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice is pure bliss.
Stone Town’s Cape Town Fish Market: One of my favorite hangouts in Stone Town, where the food is as vibrant as the atmosphere.
Shanga Paje in Paje: A hidden gem that captures the laid-back, beachy vibe of Zanzibar.
I also can’t forget the unforgettable Mnemba Island excursion, where "Swimming with the dolphins" became a memory I'll cherish forever.
Zanzibar—A Love That Will Never Fade
Zanzibar is more than a destination; it’s a part of me. Whether it’s the peace it offers, the adventures it holds, or the warmth of its people, Zanzibar will always be where my heart finds its true rhythm. And as someone who has been lucky enough to experience its magic many times, I can tell you this: once you visit, you’ll leave a piece of your heart here, just like I have. And believe me, you’ll always want to come back to find it.
