Zambia’s Missing Private Sector: A Growing Economic Crisis That Needs Urgent Action
Zambia’s private sector is barely existent in its true form. What we have instead is an economy dominated by informal micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), sole traders, and family-run businesses, most of which are not structured, not tax-paying, and not scalable. This poses a major economic threat, especially in the wake of reduced aid and donor funding.
Without a formal private sector, Zambia faces:
? A shrinking tax base – With most businesses operating informally, the government will struggle to collect taxes, limiting national revenue.
? Economic instability – The absence of strong private-sector investments means fewer job opportunities, slower economic growth, and increased financial vulnerability.
? Dependence on external funding – As donor support declines, Zambia will have no strong domestic economy to sustain national development.
The Way Forward?
The solution lies in aggressively formalizing and strengthening SMEs, creating a genuine private sector that can sustain Zambia’s economy. We need:
