Zambian Cars Are not Road worthy: Climate change has been a topic of concern for many years now and in fact Africa and Zambia in particular we have been actively participating in policymaking that are capable of reducing climate change. So today after I was reading an article about smart cities and smart transportation I came across an article from the European environmental agency which is a screenshot shown in this article. Something that came as a major concern is the figures of emission breakdown of 2016 by means of transport mode. My question is, if European cars with good roads, strictly policy on emissions threads holds per vehicle gives these alarming estimates, What do I expect on Zambian cars that are in our cities and streets ? I ask this because as a fact Zambia is a dump site for second hand old cars from Japan. Are our Vehicle Road worthy by standards of climate change , ecceptable Emission threshold and Issues of action to fight global warming ?
The union for concerned scientists on USA transport sector:
Our personal vehicles are a major cause of global warming. Collectively, cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of?all?US emissions, emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases for every gallon of gas. About five pounds comes from the extraction, production, and delivery of the fuel, while the great bulk of heat-trapping emissions—more than 19 pounds per gallon—comes right out of a car’s tailpipe. In total, the US transportation sector—which includes cars, trucks, planes, trains, ships, and freight—produces nearly?thirty percent?of all?US global warming emissions, more than almost any other sector.
In good faith I may be right to assume the situation is worse in Africa particularly in Zambia, it’s time we paid for our leisure and luxury on those Mark X , Altezas and them all, Let’s be responsible and take ownership of our climate, it’s time for Drive Green Campaign. Let’s encourage Public Transport and reduce carbon emission and other gases Toxic to our Environment. Let’s Invest in smart and E-Mobility to have connected vehicle solutions smart enough to read how much we are emoting in real time and quickly Recalibrate to reasonable threshold values. Let’s be Responsible we only have one Zambia and one Earth.
