YWCA Central Alabama: Making Every Season Bright by Giving Back
The Christmas holiday isn’t the only time we should think about others and give back to our communities however, volunteering and giving from the heart during this special time of year can make a big difference in someone’s life and strengthen families.
Speaking of making a big difference, the YWCA Central Alabama is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
The YWCA Central Alabama is a nonprofit social justice organization that was founded in 1903 - 119 years ago by Maybelle Sloss, as the Young Women’s Christian Association to give “hundreds of noble working girls influences which will keep them sweet and womanly in adverse circumstances.”?
The organization’s purpose is to support the?community?through?various programs and services?and advocate for policies and practices that impact the people they serve.?The work that is done at YWCA Central Alabama saves lives and empowers people to change their lives.?
In the spirit of the Christmas holiday each year, YWCA Central Alabama hosted their Santa’s Workshop event to help families in need have a happy holiday season. On the day of the event, December 9, 2022, children received the opportunity to take pictures with Santa and made gifts and crafts that they could give to parents, teachers, friends, and other loved ones. Meanwhile, while the children were busy making their gifts, the parents received a moment to step aside and select an age-appropriate book and a $25 gift card for each child.
“The Santa’s Workshop event was Amazing, the kids had a great time,” said Nikeshia Macon, Executive Assistant to the CEO Dr. LaRhonda Magras. “We had a lot of volunteers to show up and help out. There were also different organizations who came and volunteered their time and talent and we’re so appreciative.”
It’s never too late to give back and get involved!
“We always have families that come to the shelter that we don’t account for and people in the house, so every donation is greatly appreciated," said Macon. “We are always accepting clothes, as some women come with just the clothes on their backs. Also gift cards, toys, and toiletries for the ladies in the shelter.”
The YWCA Central Alabama counts on a network of advocates, volunteers, community partners, financial and in-kind donors, fundraiser participants, and referral organizations, corporate sponsors, grantors, and other supporters to advance their mission.
Together, everyone can help eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities!
