Yutori - Less is More

Yutori - Less is More

This week I came across a new term which just hit the spot to describe my current feelings about life: “Yutori”.

In a world where busyness and the relentless pursuit of ‘more stuff’ are considered measures of success, the Japanese concept of Yutori offers a refreshing perspective -?a paradigm shift towards achieving more with less.

Rooted in the idea of spaciousness, Yutori teaches us the art of embracing simplicity, fostering creativity, and enhancing productivity.

As Jason Hickel explores in his powerfully disruptive book "Less is More" the ethos of Yutori challenges our understanding of success by advocating for a balanced approach to life -?one that prioritises fulfillment over frantic activity. In our fast-paced business landscape, where time is currency and efficiency reigns supreme, integrating the principles of Yutori can be transformative.

Picture this: Instead of being burdened with constant multitasking and packed schedules, imagine creating intentional moments to pause. This deliberate time to breathe and reflect allows clarity and focus to influence our activities. Studies show that these intentional pauses not only improve decision-making, but also spark innovation—an invaluable asset in any work environment.

Embracing Yutori is not solely for personal benefit -?it promotes collective wellbeing. By reducing our consumption and commitments, we reduce our negative impact on the planet. Each deliberate decision to simplify contributes to a more sustainable future.

So, while reflecting on a journey toward greater impact and purpose, we could ask ourselves: What could we reduce in order to unlock a life that is beneficial not only for ourselves, but also for others and our planet?

Perhaps it's trimming unnecessary meetings that drain time and energy, or decluttering digital distractions to reclaim valuable time and space. Maybe we need to spend much less on buying ‘stuff’ we don’t necessarily need, with money we may not have, to impress people we may not know or like?

Whatever the answer may be, perhaps it's time to embrace Yutori -?a journey toward a more meaningful, mindful, and impactful existence.

What could you do less of to achieve more? As always, keen to hear your thoughts.

Best wishes,

Donna
