You've got this: Career advice for the Class of Winter 2024

By Julie McLellan , Student Professional Development Consultant (Careers Advisor)

The day you’ve been working towards is finally here—you did it! Graduation marks the end of one remarkable chapter and the start of an exciting new one. You might feel delighted about completing your studies, eager for the adventures ahead or even a little uncertain about what’s next. Perhaps all of the above—and that’s perfectly normal.

To help you navigate the transition from life as a UofG student to your next step, here are our top tips.

Feeling unsure about your future

Uncertainty is completely normal! If you’re not sure what comes next, take it one step at a time.

Start with our online pathway, “I don’t know what to do after University", designed to help you explore your options. You can also book a career coaching appointment for 1:1 guidance (see below for more details).

Make the most of Glasgow Careers Service

As a UofG graduate, you have access to Glasgow Careers support for up to two years after graduation.

Once your GUID expires, you'll be able to register for a graduate account to unlock tailored resources, advice and opportunities to help you take the next step in your career.

We'll have your back as you find your way.

Plus, we've got the ultimate crash course in career preparation: the Great Grad Guide Second Edition 2024. This short document is packed with insights and practical advice to guide your transition, including information on

  • job preparation
  • job searching
  • CVs and cover letters
  • application forms
  • job interviews
  • assessment centres
  • international graduate insight.

Prioritise your wellbeing

Starting a new chapter can be both exciting and overwhelming. Remember to take care of yourself—physically, mentally and emotionally. Whether it’s leaning on friends and family or accessing professional resources, your wellbeing comes first.

Explore the Graduate Career Advantage Scotland Wellbeing Toolkit, designed to help you navigate the transition from student to graduate life.

Complete the Graduate Outcomes Survey

Help shape the future of UofG by sharing your post-graduation journey through the Graduate Outcomes Survey. Your feedback matters and contributes to the success of future graduates. Information about the survey is available on the UofG Graduate Outcomes Survey webpage.

Take time to celebrate

It's your graduation! Take plenty of photos, soak up the atmosphere on campus and reflect on everything you’ve achieved. Milestones like these deserve to be savoured—they're the moments that fuel your resilience for the road ahead.

Congratulations, UofG Class of 2024! Your hard work and determination have brought you here, and we can’t wait to see what you achieve next.
