You’ve Decided It’s Time for a Career Change… Now What?

So, you’ve made the big decision—it’s time for a career change. But what comes next? Let’s break down the steps to make this transition as smooth as possible.

1. Take Stock of Your Skills ???

Start by listing your current core skills. Identify which are transferable and valuable across other industries. Consider working with a coach or using career assessments to clarify your strengths and areas of growth. For example, if you’ve led projects in finance, those leadership skills can transfer to a management role in healthcare.

2. Explore New Paths ???

Research industries and roles that align with your skills and passions. Informational interviews are a great way to gain insider knowledge. For instance, if you’re curious about tech, speaking with a cybersecurity professional can provide valuable insights. Also, keep an eye on growing fields—remote work and green energy are booming!

3. Update Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile ??

Tailor your CV to emphasize relevant experience and highlight achievements that showcase your adaptability. For example, if you’re moving into management, highlight your project leadership. On LinkedIn, update your headline and summary to reflect your new career direction. Consider adding a professional profile picture if you don’t already have one.

Pro tip: make sure your CV is ATS friendly - you’ll thank me later.

4. Network, Network, Network! ????

I can’t stress this enough! Leverage your current network—reach out to past colleagues or mentors who might offer advice or referrals. Attend industry-specific events and join online groups related to your new field. Consider informational interviews as a way to expand your network and gather valuable insights; for example, connecting with a UX designer can provide insights into breaking into that field.

5. Set Realistic Goals ??

Break down your career transition into manageable steps. For instance, if you need certifications, set a timeline to complete them and follow through. Use HARD goals (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult) to stay on track. I am not a fan of SMART goals in this context - they’re not particularly effective.

6. Embrace the Learning Curve ??

Expect to face challenges in a new field - this is a given - but view them as opportunities to grow. Consider online courses or certifications to bridge any knowledge gaps. For example, if you’re moving into software development, a coding bootcamp could be invaluable. Seek mentorship from someone in your target field to guide you, and remember—patience and persistence are key. LinkedIn Learning has so many courses, so take your pick.

7. Have Grace with Yourself ??

Navigating a career change in uncharted waters - it’s natural to feel uncertain at times. Remember, this is a new area, and growth takes time. Be patient with yourself and recognize that consistency and discipline are key to making progress. Celebrate small wins, and don’t be too hard on yourself when challenges arise. Progress, no matter how small, is still progress. Keep moving forward, and trust that you’ll get there in YOUR own time.

Final Thoughts:

Transitioning careers is a BOLD move, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to reinvent yourself. Stay focused, stay positive, and remember that every step forward is progress.
