You've changed and I don't like it.

You've changed and I don't like it.

I got an email. It said, "Kel, you've changed. It's really bothering me, but I just don't resonate with you anymore. I feel you've gotten too big for your boots."

When did I get this email?

Almost 2 years ago, when my book Mindful Money came out. She'd seen it on a shelf in Easons.

When I had walked away from my 16- year corporate career.

When my income went to zero.

Right after I had paid off the 6- figure debt inherited from 2008.

When I started a blog.

When I set up my first social media account.

When I embarked on a No Spend Year.

When I cut our annual outgoings by over €27k.

When I did my first radio interview, podcast and newspaper article.

When I started my own business.

When I studied to be a Qualified Financial Advisor.

When I stopped sharing my kid's photos.

When I lost weight and had to deal with several health issues.

When I was diagnosed as perimenopausal (10 years early).

When I spoke in front of a large audience.

Then I hit 6 figures.

Oh, and last week. I received a similar email in my inbox. I get variations of this email all the time.

And you will too. It may not be an email. It could be a comment, a remark, or anything.

I don't take it personally anymore, but I know it can sting. And sting hard.

Here's what I've learned over the last few years.

  • You can't please everyone.
  • There's no such thing as a critic-proof life.
  • People will have opinions! - these opinions are their opinions. Don't let them become yours. You are better off having your own anyway.

Some people will want you to stay the same. Some people think you're a Disney character ( or Roblox if you're down with the cool kids). They can customise it to their personal preferences.

And some people won't resonate with you at different points in your life. That is okay!

We are constantly changing and growing. That's life. That's actually the fun part of life, even if it doesn't feel like it at the time.

You're allowed to shape your life and make your life choices suit you. And it's okay that your people will shift and change over time.

You've changed, and it's a good thing!

Some of the most interesting people I know change all the time. Many more are still figuring out what they want while being neck-deep in adulthood.

Carve your path, and enough will follow. At the very least, you'll enjoy your journey, and isn't that what it's all about?
