For a while, TikTok reigned supreme, leaving YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels playing catch-up. But oh, how the tables are turning!
Remember when YouTube Shorts launched a few years ago? It looked like they were just trying to ride TikTok’s coattails with their cute little short-form videos. Fast forward to now, and YouTube Shorts is racking up a mind-blowing 70 billion daily views. That’s right, billion with a B.
While TikTok has been lounging on its throne, YouTube Shorts has been quietly plotting its rise to power. And guess what? They’re getting dangerously close to dethroning them.

Last year, 28% of U.S. music listeners used Shorts, and now they’ve surged to 31%. Meanwhile, TikTok has been chilling at 33%, showing zero growth.
This new rise in YouTube's popularity is a big deal, especially with TikTok’s future in the U.S. hanging by a thread. If Uncle Sam decides to ban TikTok, YouTube Shorts is perfectly poised to snatch that crown and welcome a flood of new users.
And even if TikTok sticks around, YouTube Shorts is still on track to overtake them.
TikTok isn’t going down without a fight, though. They’ve been wooing music artists with new tools and opportunities for fan engagement. But so far, it seems like their charm isn’t quite hitting the mark with music listeners.
