YouTube takes a stand on body image

YouTube announced on its blog that it has adjusted its algorithm to limit the recommendation of?videos that promote certain body types and fitness levels to support the well-being of younger users.?

The platform highlighted concerns from experts about the potential harm of repeatedly viewing certain videos that promote unhealthy weight loss goals or comparisons of physical features. While teens will still be able to access this content, YouTube’s updated algorithm hopes to prevent users from falling into a harmful “rabbit hole”.?

In a related development this week, a majority of U.S. Attorneys Generals issued their support for adding warning labels to social media platforms. Similar to warnings on cigarettes, these labels would alert users to the potential addictive nature of these platforms and the risks they pose, including harmful effects on mental health and body image.?

Famous muckbanger’s dramatic weight loss

In another corner of the internet, YouTuber Nikocado Avocado, known for his mukbang videos, revealed a crazy weight loss of 250 pounds, which he hid from his followers for two years.? In his video titled "Two Steps Ahead," he explained that he had been uploading pre-recorded content while focusing on his health.

He said his transformation was “the greatest social experiment of his life”, while also calling his viewers “brainwashed ants”. It's not clear if his "prank" was aimed at people struggling with obesity or at the many viewers who had trolled his page for years because of his weight.?

Reading about Nikocado Avocado's dramatic weight loss felt like an inverse take on the 2004 Oscar-nominated documentary Supersize Me. In that film, director Morgan Spurlock documented his weight gain and health struggles after a month of eating only McDonald's….but I digress.

Why this matters:

YouTube’s recent changes, along with similar efforts from other platforms, highlight a growing awareness of social media’s impact on mental health and body image. This shift could encourage creators to make content that is more socially responsible.

Nikocado Avocado's weight transformation left viewers unsure whether they were being trolled or inspired, but they did agree on one thing: his secret two-year journey WHILE continuing to post, is one for the YouTube history books.
