YOUTH CHAMPIONS: charity provides mental health support for young people

Scottish-based charity Mikeysline is empowering young people to advocate for positive mental health and suicide prevention during Children’s Mental Health Week (February 7-13)…

Since starting the youth champion scheme back in 2021, the charity has worked across 26 schools to help raise awareness and provide support for children suffering with their mental health.?

A total of 70 young people across the region are taking part in fundraising events and liaising with local businesses to generate awareness of the vital services Mikeysline provides.

Emily Stokes, the charity’s CEO says how important it is to make a connection at a young age in order to “break down the barriers and stigma that otherwise may leave a mental health issue untreated for many years.”?

Stokes goes on to say: “It’s important for people of all ages to know that it’s ok not to be ok and that there are many resources and people out there that can help, including Mikeysline.”

Ross Kinnaird, a current youth champion for the charity, says how it is “incredibly rewarding” and a ”once-in-a-lifetime experience”. Kinnaird encourages young people to get involved and help make a difference.?

The charity provides face-to-face support, as well as a confidential text line service and live chat across its social media channels. The goal is to make it easy for young people to reach out if they’re struggling. That’s what we like to hear.?
