Youth with a Cause: JEE’s Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals
European Confederation of Junior Enterprises (JE Europe)
JE Europe has the aim to develop, integrate and support 35,000+ students in 16 countries through the JE concept.
The unlocking of the potential of Junior Enterprises in shaping the world through a long standing commitment to UN SDGs.
In a world marked by complex challenges ranging from climate change to social inequality, the United Nations laid out a comprehensive roadmap for global sustainable development: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 interconnected goals were developed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2012 and they address a wide array of issues, including poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, and climate action, among others.?
From a global perspective, the SDGs serve as a guiding framework for addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity. By providing a common language and set of targets, the SDGs facilitate collaboration and coordination among diverse stakeholders, driving collective action towards shared objectives. As nations strive to achieve these ambitious targets by 2030, it has become increasingly apparent that concerted efforts from all sectors of society are required to drive meaningful change, youth NGOs included.
Junior Enterprises across Europe define themselves as change-makers, notably by the engagement in impacting these Sustainable Development Goals. This alignment allows JEE to ensure that our activities are driving meaningful change. Among the 17 SDGs set forth by the United Nations, Junior Enterprises Europe has identified three key areas of focus: SDG 4 - Quality Education, SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals.
SDG 4: Quality Education
Education is a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development because the more people have the opportunity to study, the more they will be empowered in choosing their own future and have an impact. But education is much more than just studying, and this is why even if each JE is attached to a higher education institution, Junior Enterprises play a pivotal role in enhancing educational experiences by providing students with real-world opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge gained in classrooms. By engaging in JE projects, students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork, which are integral for personal and professional growth.
Furthermore, JEs contribute to bridging the gap between academia and industry, offering a platform for students to interact with professionals and gain practical insights into various fields. Through hands-on projects, workshops, and training sessions, JEs foster a culture of continuous learning, empowering students to become lifelong learners equipped to address the challenges of tomorrow.
At a European level, Junior Enterprises Europe is engaged in impacting Quality Education, through the alignment of its Network and activities with the principles of inclusive and equitable quality education. This is done by setting a common workframe for Junior Entreprises to thrive and to progress as a Network and by providing access to European Institution’s programs around education. Our collaboration with BANTANI Education and the Entrecomp community testifies of the active engagement in promoting open education, entrepreneurial education and non-formal education at the European level.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Creating opportunities for decent work and economic growth is essential for building sustainable communities. Junior Enterprises stimulate economic development by providing a platform for students to undertake projects, offering innovative solutions to companies, institutions and individuals.
By being part of a Junior Enterprises, students gain valuable entrepreneurial experience, which enhances their employability and fosters a spirit of entrepreneurship. Moreover, Junior Enterprises contribute to local economies by generating employment opportunities, supporting SMEs, and driving innovation. Through our commitment to ethical business practices and social responsibility, we aim to set a precedent for sustainable economic development.

Furthermore, Junior Enterprises Europe impacts SDG 17 by nurturing its partnerships with multiple civil society organisations and business platforms, such as EIIL, ABIS, The Club of Brussels or SME Connect. By putting itself at the forefront of economic discussions, JEE to understand the needs for a sustainable and ethical economic growth fueled by decent work conditions and aspirations.
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Collaboration is key to addressing the complex challenges facing our world today. Junior Enterprises Europe understands the importance of partnerships in driving sustainable development. By forging collaborations with academic institutions, businesses, government agencies, and civil society organisations, JEE aims to create synergies that amplify their impact.
Through empowering partnerships, JEs gain access to resources, expertise, and networks that enable them to undertake larger and more impactful projects. These partnerships also facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity building, broadening even more a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within our Network.
For instance, last year Supaero Junior Conseil, Epic Junior, JESAP and Janus e.V, four Junior Enterprises from the European network conducted the Higher Education European Project, a study focused on determining strategies to improve European Higher Education. This collaborative effort involving Junior Enterprises from four different countries, France, Portugal, Spain, and Portugal, showed the possibilities deriving from diverse teams and approaches, all united under the same goals and ambitions.
Junior Enterprises are at the forefront of driving sustainable development through their commitment to SDGs 4, 8, and 17. By empowering students, fostering economic growth, and forging partnerships, Junior Entrepreneurs are not only shaping the future they want to see tomorrow but also contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world.
As we move forward, it is essential for JEs to continue integrating the principles of sustainability into their operations, inspiring future generations to become agents of change and champions of sustainable development. Together, through collaboration and innovation, Junior Enterprises will continue to make a meaningful impact on society and advance the global agenda for sustainable development. We are looking forward to the United Nations Summit of the Future that will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2024 and that will make a balance of current advancement and set the roadmap of the steps awaiting us.
