Be Yourself and Love It

Life is interesting, isn’t it? You are the main character in a world full of main characters. It’s complex, it’s competitive, it’s exciting, but it can also be a bit overwhelming when things don’t go the way you planned.

For a long time, I would compare my failures with everyone’s successes. This usually resulted in a deep feeling of regret about choices I’ve made and how they would impact my future. Atop my list of regrets was dropping out of college. Most of my friends got degrees, or were working on one, and I wondered what was wrong with me. I liked the classes I was in but never truly felt a burning passion to keep going. What I did feel passionate about was my work. Early on I had some great opportunities to lead teams and utilize my natural creative abilities, and it became an addiction. From that point on I never really looked back.

I’m not saying education isn’t important, but so far unique factors in my life have led me down a path less traveled. I felt out of place and it took me a long time to realize this was okay. Over time I have been able to remove the anchors of other’s expectations, be myself, and grow my career in a way that felt more natural to me.

If you’re confused about your path, you’re not alone. We all face this at certain times in life and it’s never too late to make a difference in your own way. Take a step back and gain a fresh perspective. Stop comparing yourself to others and start learning from them. Instead of despising the successes of people around you, celebrate them, and connect with them. Don’t dwell too much on the past. Instead, use it to shape your present perspective and future goals. You’re unique, wonderful, and full of gifts that only you can offer.

Be yourself and love it!

Love your article. Such a great reminder that we all have our own paths and passions, that we go at our own pace.

I like the article, but what if it seems like you are being punished for being yourself.

Love that you went back and finished your article! It's been great to see your progress on LinkedIn and your transition to BambooHR. I recently found myself with a lot of personal time on my hands and realized that without self love there is not much you can give to others, including your work.
