If you're UX, you're a bridge builder
Fear the next steps or enjoy the view?

If you're UX, you're a bridge builder

As a UXer, we are bridge builders; we enable users to reach outcomes faster and more easily than they otherwise could.?A bridge is basically a surface over a void, and that can be a scary and dangerous experience to cross.

As a bridge builder, always think of the three paths of your design.?

  • The "happy path" we expect our users to follow to a successful outcome.
  • The support path a user can rely on when needed to get back on track.
  • The feedback path to hear back from users how well our bridge is working for them.?

The happy path is usually enough until something adverse hits - like a gust of wind - and then some support and protection can mean a world of difference to that user above the void.

Even simply knowing there are safeguards available can make the experience less stressful - imagine crossing a bridge with no guardrails and how that would effect your focus and attention in the moment. Instead of focusing on the destination or the view out, you might spend all your time looking down in fear, missing opportunities.

All three paths should always be available, and if not, your design is not complete. Your user may be working on survival, not progress to their goal, with no way to let you know they're in trouble.?

It's not enough to simply build a path to a destination. Support and feedback can mean the difference between fear, frustration, or real harm, versus enjoyment and safety in a positive experience. Without them, your design may not be so great.?The user may not make reach the outcome they seek.?And, you may never know, if you aren't listening.

Yeah, Matthew! There should always be these three paths for better UX.
