You're so vague... I bet you think this article is about you...
And you might be right. You're reading this because you should be doing something else, but you haven't the faintest idea what that might be.
You are one of those new career nomads and you are not alone. For generations, we've had a plan. At school, Mr McMundane sat us in a little room when we were thirteen or so and told us what we would grow up to be. We then had a choice, we could follow his advice partially, or to the letter, or we could go off in a blaze of glory, disappointing our families until the end of time.
Times, as Mr Dylan once pointed out, are prone to change...
These days, Mr McMundane would need help from Google's Deep Thought or IBM's Watson if he wanted any hope of predicting what the future holds for anyone.
Look at any top ten list of careers these days and you'll find jobs that couldn't even have existed five years ago. We are no longer content to do the same thing over and over and making an impact is finally more important to us than making a buck.
The problem we do have is that there's so much choice and so many ways to make our lives impactful, we simply do not know what to do with ourselves.
The road to nowhere is paved with good intentions.
The thing is, we're all in such a hurry to find our dream job we're no longer prepared to try anything for more than five minutes. Sure we'll have a go working in that ethical office or take an internship for that Cryo-Crypto-Start-up. But it won't be long before we're back on Google looking for the next big thing. We mean well, but we don't often know what we mean. All we can say for sure is, we won't be happy until we find our destined superposition. So we sit in the city job, just waiting for our ship to come in.
If at first, you do succeed... you're probably doing it wrong.
We need to fail. We're designed to fail and with good reason. We're really good at failing. If, and when, Plan A does the fandango down the pipes, we're brilliant at realising how and why it happened. We are unique in our ability to adapt. We need to be out in the world knocking things over, getting into trouble and finding out what makes us happy, rather than sitting at home trying to work out who's going be next to shuffle off the mortal coil in Game of Thrones.
