You’re Setting the Wrong Goals for 2025

You’re Setting the Wrong Goals for 2025

Does this sound familiar?

Every January, you set big goals. You promise yourself, This year will be different. But as the months roll on, life happens. Your career demands more. Your family sees less of you. Your health and mindset? Those take a backseat too.

You start with the best intentions, but you end up feeling that each year you are losing ground.

You’re not alone in this cycle. I’ve been there. And I’ve seen countless others stuck in the same trap—chasing success in one area while the rest of life feels like it’s crumbling.

But this year can be different.

Why One-Dimensional Goals Don’t Work

Think about the goals you’ve set in the past. Annual goals, 3 or 5 year plans, LRP's, etc.

We have no problem setting goals for work—hitting revenue targets, landing big clients, or climbing the corporate ladder.

But we rarely, with the same resolve, intensity and commitment, set life goals in the same manner.

Sure, we have some New Year's Resolutions, but that's weak. Do you set "resolutions" for your work goals? I don't think so.

Here’s the hard truth: when you focus on only one part of your life, the rest suffers.

A New Approach to Goal Setting

This year, let’s do something different. Let’s set goals that create true alignment in every part of your life.

Not just in your career, but also with your spouse, your kids, your health, your faith, your finances, your mindset and others areas.

I’m not asking you to do more. I’m asking you to be more.

Let’s Break It Down: Goals That Matter

Here’s how I approach setting goals in the eight key areas of life.

  1. Spouse When was the last time you had a real conversation with your partner—without distractions? This year, set a goal to reconnect. Maybe it’s a weekly date night, a weekend getaway, or just 10 minutes every evening to talk about your day. Don’t let your spouse get what’s left over—give them your best.
  2. Kids Your kids don’t need perfection—they need you. Whether it’s coaching their team, playing a board game, or tucking them in at night, commit to being present. Trust me, they’ll remember how you showed up far more than any gift you give them.
  3. Serving Others Who in your life or community needs you right now? Maybe it’s volunteering for a cause you believe in, mentoring someone at work, or helping a neighbor. Serving others isn’t just about them—it fills your own cup too.
  4. Health Let’s face it: if you don’t prioritize your health, everything else falls apart. Start small. Take a walk during lunch. Swap out soda for water. Schedule a yearly check-up. Your body is the engine that powers everything—don’t neglect it.
  5. Finances Money isn’t the goal; it’s a tool. This year, get intentional about how you use it. Save for family memories, pay off debt, or invest in your future. Make your financial goals reflect what truly matters to you.
  6. Career Success doesn’t mean sacrificing everything else. Focus on working smarter, not harder. Delegate tasks, set boundaries, and aim for growth that allows you to reclaim time for the other parts of your life.
  7. Faith Your faith can be the anchor that steadies you. Set aside time to strengthen your spiritual connection. Maybe it’s daily prayer, attending a service, or simply pausing to reflect and give thanks. Faith gives life depth and direction.
  8. Mindset Your mindset shapes how you approach every challenge. Practice gratitude daily. Replace self-doubt with curiosity. Commit to reading, journaling, or meditating to keep your mind clear and focused.

The Secret Sauce (4 steps)

?? Pick 2-3 goals for each of these 8 areas in your life. You chose and decide what will be your needle movers.

?? Write down your goals for each of the areas so they stay evergreen and are a priority.

?? Make them specific, measurable and just a little outside your normal reach.

?? Find someone that will check in and hold you accountable to these goals. This is a critical step!
