You're *Not* Removing Bias Anyway

You're *Not* Removing Bias Anyway

Warning: If you start writing a job post with AI, you may have just added some bias...

Last week?I got to talk to 2,500+ folks in HR and Recruiting about using AI for job postings. A lot of those folks made their way over here to subscribe and I want to say welcome to the shit show!

Joking. (That's a play on the shift leader at the end of my presentation.)

But in all seriousness, if you're looking for a speaker for your event or team training?on AI for job descriptions, working with hiring managers, or writing job posts - let's talk .

Anyway, back to the presentation. At the end, I covered 4 ways to use AI to generate job postings without adding extra bias. ICYMI, here’s the advice I offered.?

  1. Analyze job titles.?If no one finds your job, it doesn’t matter how good your candidate experience is. No one can apply. Free resource anyone can use here.
  2. Use human language.?Most recruiters think they aren’t good writers and that’s a lie. If you know what to say, you know what to write. Try starting with things like “you know how to…” instead of buzzword bingo like "highly collaborative team player."?
  3. Challenge mandatory requirements.?If the hiring manager is stuck on a requirement they don’t really need, ask questions. For example, what does someone with 5 years know that someone with 4 years of experience doesn’t??
  4. Remove formatting bias.?Having too many bullets or a laundry list of preferred requirements will lead to fewer applications from marginalized groups. Tell AI to shorten your post or ask what bias exists in what you wrote.??This is the perfect use for AI because it’s input/output.

Nothing makes me happier than teaching people what I’m learning as the world of job posts evolves. It’s why I do presentations like this for HRCI and why I have this online course.?

This week, I’m offering 25% off my course How To Write A Job Post ?[Ends Saturday October 19]. Use code JobPostAI at checkout .?

In this course - you'll learn everything AI can't do like how to ask better questions in the hiring manager intake, write more inclusive mandatory requirements, and what it takes to stand out in a crowded market.?

I wrote a few other articles over the last month you might be interested in reading.

Thanks for learning with me!
