You're Not A Real Nurse Unless You Work In A Hospital!

Why Nurses Should Not Rely on One Stream of Income

I can remember being made to feel that I did not fit in anywhere. I didn’t have one of the traditional inpatient administrative roles. I wasn't a professor or in education. I was a nurse entrepreneur.

I took a teaching position for a short time, believing I had a lot to offer students. While being introduced to other professors during an interview for another teaching position, I was asked where I worked. Since my full-time job was my business, I responded with my business name and that I was a nurse consultant. The professor who asked gave me this strange look. I then mentioned the name of the school where I was teaching part-time, and she suddenly seemed relieved or as if she finally understood. I laughed on the inside—as if you're not a nurse if you do not work in traditional roles.

But nursing is an ever-evolving field with opportunities beyond traditional roles. Nurses have a wealth of skills that can be leveraged in innovative ways, and relying on a single stream of income can limit their potential for growth and financial stability.

The Reality of Nursing in 2025

The nursing profession has always been synonymous with selflessness, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to others. Yet, as we navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape in 2025, it is imperative that nurses turn their focus inward—prioritizing their own health and wealth. By doing so, they not only ensure their well-being but also enhance their capacity to care for others.

The global healthcare system continues to face challenges: staffing shortages, increasing patient loads, technological advancements, and post-pandemic recovery efforts. Nurses are at the center of these challenges, often working long hours in high-stress environments. These factors have led to alarmingly high rates of burnout, mental health issues, and physical ailments among nurses.

Financial pressures compound the situation. The recent layoffs at Mass General Brigham due to a $250 million deficit serve as a stark reminder of the instability in the healthcare industry. Rising costs of living, student loan debt, and insufficient retirement planning leave many nurses feeling overwhelmed. Addressing these dual pressures of health and wealth is essential for sustainability in the profession.

Why Nurses Need Multiple Income Streams

Relying solely on a paycheck from one employer leaves nurses vulnerable to financial instability, workplace stress, and limited career growth. Additional income streams offer financial security, career flexibility, and the opportunity to explore passions beyond the bedside.

That’s why I’m inviting you to the Health & Wealth Expo: A Virtual Summit—a game-changing event designed to equip nurses with the tools and knowledge to create multiple income streams, improve financial literacy, and build sustainable wealth.
