Most people don't achieve their goals.
Either life gets in the way or their goals get put off for a day or two which turns into weeks or they just aren't inspired to finish them out. Whatever the case might be, what gets started is often never finished.
And usually, these goals get set right at the beginning of the year.
You know when everyone sets those unrealistic and lofty resolutions, hoping that year will be the year everything changes for them.
Only to look up and be back at square one the following year.
Now, by no means am I trying to be pessimistic or cynical. This is just the reality for a wide majority of people.
But then again, this isn't an article about other people.
It's an article about you.
This is about you getting real with yourself and accessing where you're currently at with your goals and how committed you are to finishing them out.
You might be behind on them, but that doesn't mean it's too late.
You might not believe as much, but that doesn't mean you can't refocus.
Or you might just be wondering how you can zero in and crush all of your ambitions. Whichever it might be, I think this article might help you see how to stop waiting on your goals to accomplish themselves.
If you want to know how you can adjust and adapt to finish out your goals...
Here Are 3 Things You Might Be Doing Wrong:
- Too worried about the results and not the process. I know most of us can get so consumed with reaching the end that we forget about the journey. The thing is that all great things start with a single step and end with one as well. Look at your goals the same way. Looking at the bigger picture can be overwhelming plus make you feel like you have so far to go. This might be true, but all you can do is focus on what you can do today to make a difference a few months from now. This means implementing a process for staying consistent with your goals. If your goal is to lose 50 lbs or generate an additional $50,000 in revenue for your business, ask yourself, "What can I do day in and day out that brings me closer to reaching that goal?"In order to have big results, you have to have a system in place to get there. Think big, but take small, consistent actions.
- Too busy looking around at everyone else. How many times a day do you get caught up looking at someone else's social media profiles or checking out other people's stories and posts? Now, think about how much time that takes up per week. Being interested or curious as to what anyone else is doing is distracting you from getting done what you need to get done. Trust me when I saw, you're not missing anything by not being on Instagram or LinkedIn for a few hours. Unless you're using it for business reasons or it's conducive to you reaching your goals, leave your phone in another room and get to work. You'll thank yourself later.
- Too much debating and worrying about perfection. Done and good is much better than debating about being perfect and not starting. Your goals aren't concerned with perfect. They're concerned with results. The only way you're going to get results is if you put perfection to the side and get to work. If you're hesitating to start doing, you're overthinking it. Just take the next best action that you can for the moment. Furthermore, don't be so hard on yourself if you miss a day or get off track. Judgment leads to counter production. Push yourself. Work hard. At the same time, known when it's time to give yourself a break to recharge.
The Importance Of Tracking Your Progress
One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou is, "If youdon't know where you'vecome from, youdon't know where you're going."
Personally, I believe this applies to setting goals as well.
You have to be able to know where you started and where you're trying to end up when you implement gaols into your life.
If a goal isn't specific, measurable, and something you can track then you more than likely won't get the results you want.
As critical as it is to set goals, and have systems for those goals, it's just as important to track and access your progress consistently over time.
Audit yourself. know what you're doing right and what you need to improve upon.
Ask yourself questions such as,
- Where was I the most productive? How come?
- Where was I the least productive? What caused that?
- When did I get down on myself and give up on something prematurely? What happened there?
- How come I didn't finish some of the projects I said I wanted to finish in the past? Was I too busy with other things?
- How did I get too busy?
- Why did I say 'Yes' to those other opportunities if I knew it would make me too busy for the things I truly wanted to work on?
Be in complete control of what you're doing and where you're trying to go.
Doing this will fundamentally change the direction of your life and the way you see your goals.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle
