'You're More Than Just the DJ'?

'You're More Than Just the DJ'

4.47am on a cold wintry night in March 1981 on dark desolate country road to nowhere. Not a sound. There’s a car on that road; the only car for miles around. The driver, Ron, in his early 30s is travelling home from a family vacation. His wife is asleep in the passenger seat, his 3 boys in the back seat. The eldest of his sons, John (7) is awake. Ron is listening to his favourite radio station, KHTM, humming away and keeping vigilant. Two hours remaining of the journey home. John is calmly listening, the sun is slowly breaking through and he hears the DJ, Larry, saying “Good Morning, It’s KHTM, it’s a tough road ahead, but I’ve a feeling everything’s going to be alright today…you just keep going, my friend”.

The song starts…

“Here comes the sun

Here comes the sun, and I say

It's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter

Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun

Here comes the sun, and I say

It's all right”

A little voice from the back seat -

“I really like that song”.

Ron smiles to himself. He appreciates his son’s good taste. It’s Ron’s favourite song and his son has a love for it too. It’s something they share, a memory together.

Spring 2010, John is all grown up, he’s driving along that same road, listening to that same radio station. His teenage daughter, Jane is in the passenger seat, coming home after a break up with a boyfriend. KHTM is playing and the same DJ, Larry plays ‘The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun’,just as dawn is breaking.

“Dad, turn that up, I like that song”.

John smiles to himself and tells Jane the story about her Grandad, Ron and the first time he heard that song on a cold, wintry night.

Eight Years later, Jane calls Larry at KHTM to tell him her family’s story, the memories shared between Ron, John and Jane all because of Larry, the DJ.

“I’m getting married next year and Here comes The Sun is the wedding song and I just wanted to thank you personally, Larry for creating some beautiful memories for our family”.

Jane’s wedding day comes around and Larry has “Here comes the sun”cued up and ready to go on his radio show, but not without a story to intro that amazing song. The story about a family of three generations on a cold, wintry road at dawn and a special request for the bride to be…

Music; It’s like a circle…it has that ‘Knock on’ effect!

We’re not just radio presenters, we’re the innovators, the memory makers, the happiness creators, the storytellers, the picture painters, the friends, the music makers…

Next time you put that fader up…it’s not ‘just another link’

It’s history in the making!

YOU make a difference!

Sometimes you never realise the impact you’re making until you hear a story like Larry from KHTM did.

Don’t underestimate the power of sound! The Power of YOU :)

Now, go, make some memories and some great radio!
