Monica was born and raised in Orland. she is a third-generation beautician, and she has been doing it for over 20 years with her mom, but about three years ago, she decided to retire. Monica decided to move to the city for the first time in 20 years to open her own business, and she did it in her residential home. It’s Possible to Start a Business Legally at Home
If you decide to have a business at your home, you can get a permit to do it. At (02:36), Monica explains how she turned her garage into a business spot and how she was able to obtain a permit authentically. Her greatest mission is to finish her career and be there for the people she loves. Monica says working from home has been very beneficial, especially during the pandemic where you couldn’t be both. You had to either go out to work or take care of your kids, no bargain.
The Change and Key Success Factors in the Beauty Industry?
At (06:43), Monica describes the changes she has witnessed since she started her career at 18 when she got her license in 1997. According to her, the industry is going back to the old school in some ways, but it’s not so much about the industry changing it aging out. People get tired, and making money is tied behind labor and hard work. No one can make money on a lunch break.
Monica learned a lot from her mom, who has been doing it for 50 years. She describes her first experience at work and the most significant thing that she learned about in?building clientele?that has remained constant over the year.?“The industry is more of you selling yourself nit skills, 80% is yourself and 20% is skill.”
How Building Your Clientele In The Beauty Industry
At (09:10), Monica shares her greatest challenge in building up her clientele in the industry. From her story, working with her mom, keeping up with her, and learning along the way was the hardest part. She had to forget what the beauty school taught her, especially on sanitation, and start learning from what she was doing. Monica believes we can learn so much from the older generation; they are the ones that paved the way for us and the bravest of all.
How Monica is Helping the Young Generation in the Industry?
Monica has been speaking to young people, including her niece, who is in her 20s, before joining beauty schools to ensure they know the reality of what they’re getting into. According to her, you can get comfortable, but you can’t get rich doing beauty. It’s hard work, and sometimes you are going to screw up. No one has it perfect, but fix yourself and move on. But nothing is more beautiful than putting a veil on a bride or going to the graduations of kids who passed through her hands. This keeps her motivated and moving forward.?
From her perspective, hair is a canvas, and the people are the art. The people that come to her are not just clients; they are her friends. They have their stories, and she loves the way they come when they need something. This is what inspired her to podcasting. She started her podcast?“No Conditions Podcast”?to give them a space for their stories to be heard. To hear more about Monica’s inspiring experiences and achievements, tune in at (13:07)
What Volunteer Fire Fighters Mean to Monica?
Another reason why Monica got into podcasting was the local events. Her husband, dad, uncles, and cousins have worked in the volunteers’ fire department. According to her, the fire department has historically volunteered, but all they do is go out. For them, they have the firemen spot wears for donations, and she thought the best way to plug in and promote was by podcasting. The Perception and Reality of Care
People don’t care how much you know; all they care about is whether you care. At 22:30 explains how perception kills, and according to her, you’ve to stand up and fight for other people. You’ve to think about somebody besides yourself. You can’t make the world go round on your own. Hard work and working together make it go round. Always be good, people keep memories, and they’re going to remember whether you helped them out or you completely ignored them on their darkest days.?
Why It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect?
At 30:10, Monica explains why she loves podcasting, but she took too long to realize that it didn’t have to be perfect. People don’t want a perfectly scripted podcast; people want to see your life and what you are doing in it. If they want a perfect script, TV is the best option. Monica also talks of how she discovered TIKTOK during the pandemic and her experience from the first encounter. To hear of her experiences with TIKTOK and books, go to 30;10.
You Have to Keep Moving Forward, Show Up and Do Better
If you carry too much and people expect you to do it up to the finish line, get somebody to help do the work. From Monica’s experience, there are so many times she could have buried her face in the sand, but she chose to stand up and do it herself. After all, the victory was all hers. You have to respect the hustle; people are getting up and doing everything they are supposed to. Just because you chose not to, it doesn’t mean you have to stop them. Knowing Your Goals and Setting Your Pace
At 38:41, Monica explains why there is nothing wrong with a person not having the same goals as you. She had different goals with her mother, but she was giving her tools to last her a lifetime. Monica arguably says that she has people in her life letting her down all the time, but that is the society we’re living in today. The younger generation has no time for courtesy, but work your way up, and when one leaves, that is an opportunity for another on the line.
