You're going to have a personal brand whether you input into it yourself, or not.

Benefits and downsides of building a Personal Brand

A personal brand is like a fingerprint: unique to you and something that sets you apart from the rest of the world. Building a personal brand can open doors to new opportunities, increase your visibility and credibility, and even boost your income. But like any other endeavor, building a personal brand also has its downsides.

The benefits

One of the biggest benefits of building a personal brand is that it can help you stand out in a crowded job market. With so many people competing for the same positions, having a strong personal brand can help you differentiate yourself from the competition and make you more attractive to potential employers or clients.

Another benefit of building a personal brand is that it can help you increase your visibility and credibility. By establishing yourself as an expert in your field, you can attract more followers and gain a larger audience. This can lead to more opportunities to speak at conferences, write articles, or even land a book deal.

Downsides

However, building a personal brand also has its downsides. One of the biggest downsides is that it can be time-consuming and require a lot of effort. Whether you're creating content, networking, or building your online presence, it takes a lot of work to build and maintain a strong personal brand.

Another downside is that it can be difficult to maintain authenticity while building a personal brand. It's easy to get caught up in the "personal branding" mindset and start to present a version of yourself that is not entirely true to who you are.

"Why did the personal brand cross the road? To stand out on the other side!"

Lastly, building a personal brand can be a great way to increase your visibility and credibility, but it also requires a lot of effort and can be difficult to maintain authenticity.

As the old saying goes, "Your personal brand is the promise of what you deliver." Investing in yourself and your personal brand is an investment in your future. It may take time and effort, but the rewards are well worth it in the long run. A strong personal brand can open doors to new opportunities and help you achieve your goals. So, go ahead and start building your fingerprint today!

Too many people forget about their personal brand. I say stay professional, helpful and kind at all times, especially when the not so good times are hitting.

The one thing I find challenging while building my personal brand is consistency. It takes effort, practice, self-retrospection and a constant reminder to myself so that my focus is clear.

I find it helpful to think about this in terms of 'reputation' - we all have one - you have one, I do - so you might as well accept that and then look at it objectively, should share with you my slides on this topic I give to young grads joining our firm!
