You’re not for everyone. And that’s okay.

Hi, I’m John Lacey and this is Build A Presentation Muscle.

I don’t know about you, but I like spicy food.

I recently order a bunch of my favourites —Sambal Olek, Preserved Chilli and Garlic, and a few different varieties of Tabasco— from Amazon.

I was fascinated to read this Tabasco review:

“This is [the] worst sauce I had ever tasted…. I don’t know why people [are] giving it 5 stars. Its is like you are tasting venager [sic] with chilli…”

Okay, for the uninitiated this is the ingredient list for Tabasco Original Red Sauce:

  • Distilled Vinegar;
  • Red Pepper;
  • Salt.

That’s it. That’s the whole list.

So it tastes like what it is. That’s probably a good thing.

I am reminded of an interview Tori Amos gave years ago to promote her then new album To Venus And Back. It used a lot of synths and electronic instrumentation. It was a big departure from her acoustic piano roots. An interviewer asked if she was worried people wouldn’t like it. And her response has stayed with me for years.

She said something to the affect of, “Just because nobody shows up to the party that doesn’t change the quality of the wine.”

So enjoy the Tabasco and the Wine, and don’t worry about the people who don’t “get” it. It’s not for them. It’s for you, and for people like you.

This is a topic I’ve thought about often when asked by people if I enjoy their content or style of work. Sometimes I don’t and I will admit that (kindly). It doesn’t have to be for me to be valid, good or off great quality. Whatever we do there’s an audience looking for it and someone will see the benefit in what we do.
