Is this your year to live on PURPOSE?
All of us are born with a unique purpose
The key to creating a life filled with joy, meaning and abundance is to discover your purpose and use it like a compass to guide you in the direction of your passions and dreams.
We do a lot of this work in the Reboot process and when clients get insight into what their purpose is, the real magic happens.
Unfortunately, most of us go through life never discovering what our purpose is. That’s a tragedy, because when you don’t make decisions based on what gives you the most joy and fills your life with meaning, you’ll end up spending far too much time unhappy and wishing you were doing something else.
Wouldn’t you rather spend your time doing something you love?
Here’s a technique that I came across recently in a presentation by Jack Canfield, author of the well-known publication ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’. Jack spoke about narrowing down your purpose and how using that concept to guide your life can be extremely enlightening. Being honest with yourself about your ideal world and genuine joys will help you boil down your true purpose.
The following four question process can help you get clear on your purpose so you can create a life that allows you to spend your time doing something you love.
Spend 15-20 minutes digging deep for your answers. Write them down.
What are the two qualities you most enjoy expressing in the world?
For example, enthusiasm, joy, creativity, love, optimism, authenticity, spontaneity, faith, confidence, compassion, courage.
How do you most enjoy expressing these qualities in your life?
For Example, teaching others, writing books, creating art, leading, managing, performing, using your computer skills, or creating order out of chaos.
Mine are inspiring and empowering people by helping them shine a light on their strengths, passions, purpose and then move forward confidently embracing all of these.
What are the ways you most enjoy showing up in the world and sharing those qualities?
Pick your top two.
Now write a description of what the world would look like if it were operating perfectly according to you.
In my perfect world, everyone is doing the work they love purposefully and feeling immense joy, which ripples out to all other areas of their own life and in turn, has a positive impact on the lives of their family and friends.
For someone else it might be that everyone is taking 100% responsibility for themselves, where everyone is behaving in a kind and compassionate way.
Or everyone is living an ecologically sustainable lifestyle.
Whatever it is for you, write it down. Take your time. Dig deep.
Combine all three of your answers in one statement.
- The two qualities you most enjoy expressing
- The two ways you most enjoy expressing them
- Your vision of an ideal world
Use it as your inner guidance system
Looking at what you have written down will start to give you clarity about what your life purpose is, because for most people their life purpose has to do with expressing their natural qualities in a way they love, to help bring about their ideal world.
For example, my life purpose is inspiring purposeful career and life transformations by empowering people to clarify and then live their highest vision in the context of balance and happiness.
Once you have a better understanding of what your purpose is, use it as your inner guidance system to get from where you are in life to where you want to be. Just as you use your GPS in your car to get from A to B.
So how can you tell if you really have figured out your purpose?
Easy, really easy. Simply gauge the amount of joy you are experiencing.
The activities that bring you the greatest joy are the ones that are in alignment with filling your purpose.
For example, one of my clients Laurianne did a similar exercise to this in our coaching and clearly identified with her purpose.
She has a strong desire to “Contribute to saving the planet for future generations by educating and inspiring people to make better environmental choices.” Laurianne’s belief is that through small, everyday changes we can all make a difference to help care for our planet.
She wasn’t unhappy enough to leave her job, but something was missing for her. She now writes a regular blog on the topic at https://everydaysustainability.co.nz which fulfills her desire to educate others on the topic of sustainability.
Another of my clients Paul, who is working in a technical trade, identified a strong desire to teach others and get away from the mundane day to day life of repairs and dealing with unhappy customers. This change has propelled him into a more joyful and satisfying existence.
Last word
Living with and on purpose can make such a positive impact on your life that it will infiltrate all areas of your world including mental, spiritual and physical health. This will also have a ripple effect on all of those who come into contact with you.
What are you waiting for? You are worth it.
