The mental health conversation has evolved rapidly, and in 2024, it's not just a ‘nice-to-have’—it's a necessity. Employees today expect more than just a paycheck; they want to know that their employers genuinely care about their wellbeing and that managers are equipped to offer meaningful support.

In today’s workplace, stress and burnout can feel like that unnecessary debt—one that drains energy and productivity. So, how can you free your team from that burden and ensure a healthier, more resilient workplace?

  1. Train Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA): Equip your managers and staff with the skills to recognise early signs of mental distress and offer immediate, practical support. Ongoing support, such as The Exchange , an online network I co-facilitate, can also help foster collaboration and provide a safe space for sharing best practices.
  2. Focus on Remote Workers: With changes in employment law, businesses must offer working-from-home options. However, remote employees often feel isolated, which can lead to burnout. Virtual wellness programmes and regular check-ins can help remote teams feel supported and connected.
  3. Incorporate Mental Health into Your Hiring Process: Ask candidates about their approach to managing stress and share your organisation’s mental health resources during onboarding. From day one, this will set the tone for your company to value mental well-being.

I’ve worked with companies like Synetiq, Hull University, and Bonhams Auctioneers in the past year. We provided Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to equip their staff with tools to identify and address mental health concerns. At Hull University, we also delivered sessions on Suicide Awareness and The Road to Resilience, helping their team handle stress and burnout more effectively.

I’m always seeking insightful content that sparks new ideas about mental health and personal growth. Here’s what’s been on my radar recently:

  • Listening to: With the passing of the legendary Frankie Beverly of Maze , I’ve been revisiting some of their classics. I was lucky enough to see Maze live at the Brixton Academy when I lived in London, and the tributes on R&B stations like Magic have been a nostalgic reminder of his incredible legacy.
  • Watching: I recently revisited James Earl Jones' performance in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . I saw him live in the West End, and it’s no surprise that he was just as captivating on stage as he was behind the voice of Darth Vader. His passing was another sad moment, but his work continues to inspire.
  • Reading: I’ve just started The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav, a book about aligning our actions with our inner values. It’s been an eye-opener, and I’m excited to explore its teachings further.
