Your Work, Your Voice. Be your own Advocate

Your Work, Your Voice. Be your own Advocate

The phrase "My work will speak for itself" is a common mantra among high achievers, confident in their abilities and the quality of their output. However, in today's fast-paced workplaces, this belief can be a dangerous misconception. With so many competing priorities and demands, managers can easily become overwhelmed and overlook the less obvious contributions.

But is it enough to simply do excellent work? Unfortunately, the answer is often no. This, combined with misplaced expectations that your work will automatically be recognized, can lead to disappointment and stagnation.

For example, a high-performing employee might assume that their exceptional work will automatically be noticed and rewarded, only to find that their contributions are overlooked or undervalued. This can be especially frustrating when others receive recognition or opportunities that seem undeserved.

Relying solely on your work to speak for itself assumes that others will automatically recognize and appreciate your efforts. But, in reality, recognition and opportunities often require intentional self-advocacy and strategic visibility.

By waiting for your work to speak for itself, you risk:

  • Being overlooked for promotions or opportunities
  • Having your contributions attributed to others
  • Missing out on valuable feedback and growth opportunities

Don't get me wrong - producing exceptional work is crucial. However, it's equally important to:

  • Communicate your achievements and impact effectively
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders
  • Seek feedback and learn from criticism

Take ownership of your success by striking a balance between delivering high-quality work and proactive self-promotion. Don't assume that your work will speak for itself - make sure your voice is heard too.

Remember, recognition is not a guarantee, but by speaking up and showcasing your value, you'll be more likely to get the acknowledgment you deserve.

Would like to hear the views from others.
