Most Kiwis I’m talking to are fed up. With the stress of a seemingly never-ending pandemic compounded by rising costs of living, people overcommitting in the housing market and worries about the Ukraine war, no wonder many of us feel we are running on empty in the kindness department.
Sometimes we just need to take a moment and concentrate on ourselves and our lives. I’ve been doing my own self check-in with Master Plumbers’ five pillars of wellbeing: Nourish, Sleep, Active, Mind and Connect.
Nourish
I’ve been trying to eat and drink healthily, especially with the public holidays coming up. My intention is to eat and drink within reason, as I want to enjoy the breaks with my family and friends as best I can.
Sleep
It goes without saying that getting a night of good sleep will help with all of the above. If you’re having problems getting to sleep, try limiting screen time before bed, have a nice, dark room and stay away from coffee and alcohol for at least two hours before you go to bed.
Active
I’ve been getting myself out of bed early to exercise as I find it sets my mind up for the day and gives me lots of energy. It’s a challenge to get up early as the mornings get colder and it’s even earlier for those of you in the plumbing business, but it’s worthwhile and great for your wellbeing.

Mind
By focusing on your own wellbeing and keeping yourself healthy, it will help you deal with the stresses that come your way.
Connect
When communication is working well in your relationships, you connect better with those around you both at work and at home. While we’re all a bit stressed, it’s worth stopping and reflecting before reacting in ways that can damage those connections.
Focus on what you can control to help deal with outside events that you can’t control.
Check out the Master Plumbers website for further information on the five pillars of wellbeing.
Take care out there and be kind to each other.
