Joe Molloy swaps Newstalk for daily Indo podcast

Joe Molloy has left Newstalk and Off The Ball to host a daily sports podcast with the Irish Independent that will launch this autumn.

Molloy, who started with Newstalk as a researcher in 2008, has presented Off the Ball since 2013 and is a seven-time Sports Broadcaster of the Year.

He will continue to present Virgin Media Ireland ’s television coverage of the Six Nations following his move to the Mediahuis IRL -owned publisher.

The Kildare native went to Salesian College in Celbridge before studying English and History at Maynooth University and joining Liffey Sound FM and then Newstalk after graduation.

Molloy was initially a researcher on The Hard Shoulder, and he presented on Kfm Radio at the weekends while waiting for his first on-air opportunity, which came after the Second Captains' team left Off the Ball in 2013. He is married and has a daughter.

Maura Fay takes up Claire Byrne role

Maura Fay has been made a reporter with RTE Radio One’s Today with Claire Byrne programme after leaving her role as producer of The 2 Johnnies.

Fay met the Tipperary duo while working as a researcher on the Late Late Show and maintained her career at RTé while producing their podcast over the past six-and-a-half years.

The Meath native studied Journalism & Gaeilge at what is now Technological University Dublin and had roles with Newstalk Breakfast and the Irish Farmers Journal before making her way to the national broadcaster, where she has done research for various television and radio programmes.

Fay moved to Today with Claire Byrne in June, but confirmed her departure on an episode of The 2 Johnnies last week, saying that “something had to give” between her two jobs in Dublin and Tipperary.

“You always say you want to go out on a high and I think that this is leaving at the perfect time. I’m so sad to be going but I’ll still be friends with ye,” she said.

Irish people excited for the Paris Olympics

More than half (57%) of Irish people are interested in the 2024 Olympics, which started on Wednesday, new research from Ipsos B&A shows.

Just 44% of people in host nation France are interest in the Games though, with China (86%), Thailand (77%) and Indonesia (75%) out in front in terms of excitement.

The Games are widely believed to have a positive and unifying effect, and around three-quarters (77%) of Irish people say they present an important opportunity for the world together.

Furthermore, 72% said they bring Ireland together, and 79% said the Olympics make them proud of Ireland, while eight in 10 (82%) think the Games inspire future generations to take part in sport, even if only 48% are inspired themselves.

Irish viewers are most interested in athletics, football, gymnastics and aquatics, but there is also above-average interest in boxing, rugby, gold and rowing.

“Irish people are clearly excited about the next few weeks and with such a strong team representing us in Paris there are many reasons to be hopeful for success,” said Jessica Hearne , senior research executive at Ipsos B&A.

“We can see that the excitement stretches beyond our traditional medal successes with big interest in sports such as athletics and gymnastics. The high levels of interest in golf too are noteworthy, with Ireland sending superstars of the world game to compete in Paris.

“The real contests perhaps will be on the couches around Ireland with the battle for the remote control, with men looking forward to football and boxing, while women showing more interest in gymnastics and aquatics.”

18% increase in advertising complaints

The Advertising Standards Authority (IRL) (ASA) received a total of 1,402 complaints relating to 1,134 different adverts last year, an increase of 18% from 1,189 in 2022.

The ASA found that 59 adverts were in breach of its Code of Standards. Two-thirds (68%) of complaints were made on the basis that the advert was misleading, and 8% claimed the advert in question was offensive.

A fifth (20% or 279) of complaints regarded social media influencers, and the ASA? and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) launched Joint Guidance on Influencer Marketing in October.

The most common complaints about influencers were around missing, obscured or incorrect labels or hashtags.

“Ongoing promotion of the guidelines will continue into 2024 to educate influencers and brands on the correct disclosure of commercial content on social media, fostering trust in advertising for all and safeguarding consumers from advertising that is harmful, misleading or offensive,” said Orla Twomey , CEO of the ASA,

NBC goes ad-free for Olympic opening ceremony

NBCUniversal , the US broadcasting rights-holders for the Home of Olympics Hospitality is set to exceed $1.2bn in advertising sales for the Games, including $350m from new advertisers.

The Comcast -owned group has created a number of brand integrations for the Olympics, including a advertising-free hour during the opening ceremony, which will be sponsored by 可口可乐公司 , Delta Air Lines , 礼来 , Toyota Motor Corporation , Visa and Xfinity . The brands or ‘Olympic Ringer Holders’ will have their logos on screen for 10-minute increments.

“We created a win-win. We're not eliminating advertisers — we're giving them a different role,” said Dan Lovinger, president of Olympics and Paralympic partnership at NBCUniversal.

“The advertisers will be known to the viewer and we'll give them credit, but the viewer will also be able to stay with the spectacle, which will be fantastic.”
