Your Website Mechanics

Could the emphasis on Website Design be blurring the more important fundamental issue of Website Functionality? Shouldn't what your website does be more important than how it looks?

I've been involved in Website Analytics or understanding online consumer behaviour for close to 3 years and low conversion rates, high bounce rates still dominate as the biggest obstacles to online website engagement. You would have thought by now, with the huge amounts of Big Data companies, consultants etc that this area would already be on the way to being solved! I suggest that part of the problem is an over emphasis on Design as opposed to Function. We could call it passive (what it looks like) vs active (what the thing does).

My own system in developing and deploying websites starts with asking what do I want the website to do. Kind of treating it like an engine . The goal is to understand what parts are required for the site , what other features may be needed in advance and how to re- position given a range of behaviour scenarios .

Some techniques that I'me working on to kick start this new approach include using Augmented Reality and IoT within websites. Websites can be purpose built to empower end users through fully integrated Augmented Reality.

When it comes to building your own site some basic takeaway's should include an approach that put's functionality at the forefront.
