Is your website GDPR-compliant?

It's not just that simply displaying a cookie consent pop-up makes their website GDPR compliant.

You may penalty of more than $25,000 for breaking GDPR rules.

They thought they were being compliant the whole time. You guessed it. Their cookie consent pop-up was ineffective.

GDPR is an abbreviation for General Data Protection Regulation. It is Europe's data protection legislation.

If you process the personal data of EU citizens (and you may be unaware of it), you must comply with GDPR regardless of where you live on the planet.

For non-compliance with GDPR, there are two levels of administrative fines that can be imposed (on a case-by-case basis):

  1. Maximum annual global turnover of €10 million ($12.5 million) (whichever is higher).
  2. Annual global turnover of up to €20 million ($24.73 million) (whichever is higher).

GDPR compliance is not as simple as displaying a pop-up on a website. Many businesses hire full-time employees (known as Data Protection Officers) solely to ensure GDPR compliance.
