Your waste can be someone else’s fortune.

So, this morning, I deliberately stood at our road by my house gate, waiting for iron pickers. You can identify them by the sack they carry and the iron in their hand. Most times they make noise like “shaka shaka”.

After about 5mins, I saw one crossing the road and I called his attention, he said, “Me?”, in his mind, he might be thinking, what have this lady got to do with a dirty looking boy looking for iron. As he came, I asked him, you pick iron, right? He affirmed. Then, I told him follow me.

However, earlier before now, I have been collecting these irons over a month. It contained mostly empty can drinks and empty iron spray cans. As we reached my compound, I have already brought out the sack of empty iron, about quarter of the big sack I have. I poured the recyclable empty can drinks to his own sack and I left.

Consequently, something happened that touched which made me write this piece almost immediately. As I was leaving, he said, “thank you”, I did not look back I just said, “Ehen”. But he called me again, “Madam”, that type of call that you know someone is seeking your attention, I quickly turned. With so much emotion in his eyes, he said, “Thank you” and I responded, almost in tears, “You are welcomed”. This little gesture of mine has made this young man happy.

Moral of the story: Please, those empty can drinks are recyclable, after enjoying the can drinks, get a sack and continue keeping the empty can. Someone somewhere needs them for their daily bread. When it is a little much, you can give your gateman to give them on your way out and start all over again.
