Your Voice is Powerful

Your Voice is Powerful

Your voice is beautiful

Your voice is important

Your story is inspiration

Do you feel heard though?

In what ways do you project your voice and your story.?It doesn’t need to be filmed on a stage in-front of thousands as a wonderfully prepared and powerful TED talk.?You use your voice every day, whether it is chatting to someone, a friend, a colleague.?A WhatsApp message to a prospect.?Short or long form video.?Just with the quotes you post, you are using your voice.

Maybe you love to blog, you find it cathartic and helps you to order your thoughts.?Be brave and publish that blog.?Even if only your Mother reads it, your voice is heard.

Our voices demand to be heard in any format as the true power of the voice lays in the mind.?There are many things we can do to amplify that and to give our voice the stage it desires.?The little self-doubt Imp that nags at your left ear is there for every single living soul on the planet.??Feeling anxious about how others will perceive you and even maybe judge you is part of life and professional maturity.?The more you deny your voice any stage, the stronger your little “Self-Doubt Imp” will become.

Last week at Pause for Breath we did a “practical”, looking at ways to elevate our voice, and also ways to put out the fire that everyone’s anxieties relishes setting in the pits of our stomachs.?We looked at ways we can control our voices and give them more strength in verbal settings.?Now as much as I personally love the medium of writing for my voice to be heard, not many people enjoy reading anymore, we’ve entered a faster age of video calls, conferences and back face to face, so now is the time to embrace it.?So, follow through with me now and I’ll take you through the power voice steps.?These are even more important when talking on the dreaded camera, you know that thing that you feel like you are staring into the abyss of fear of.

Firstly, if you are sitting at your desk right now, I want you to slump in your chair, cross your legs, or put them up on your foot stool.?Now try and take a deep breath in as you are…. Is it easy or difficult to get the air right into your belly??Your voice needs air!

Now sit up, place both feet flat on the floor, rock backwards and forwards until you find that bony bit in the middle of your crotch, sit on that, imagine that a piece of string is attached from those bones to the top of your skull, extending up to the ceiling.?You should now feel your abdominal muscles fire up and support your seated position.?Now put both hands on your hips and sit in super wo/man pose, pull your shoulders back and slightly puff out your chest (like a peacock).?Now take a deep breath and feel it wash down your chest and spill beyond your diaphragm.?

Relax your hands but keep those shoulders back and chest open.?

Obviously, you can’t close your eyes right now as your reading… but imagine those nerves, that anxiety about speaking as a fireball in the pit of your stomach.?Say “hi”, recognise it and acknowledge its existence.?Now breath, take a deep breath, imagine the air flowing like a waterfall through to the bottom of your lungs, spilling over your diaphragm, beautiful clear cool water trickling over the fireball of anxiety and nerves.?Visualise the water putting out or even just taming the fire, as you breath out feel your negative self-talk flow out your mind with the breath.

Practise!?Practise this every day for 5 minutes, this sitting and visualisation process, write down the difference you feel the next time you are on a video call.?Did you smile more, come across more professionally mature??Did it feel calmer?

On Friday 24th June, 12pm BST we will explore together your results from this little practise, but also we will look at how to become a great story teller??What makes a good story???

See you then legends, until then have an epic week.????

Oh yes Em, great topic - I hid my voice for so many years thinking I had nothing to say that people would want to hear, and there will be so many out there still doing the same - so great that you are empowering them to speak up so we can hear all the wonderful things they have to tell the world ????

Great article! I'm more of a writer/reader myself because I like to search for the right words & pause while reading to reflect & absorb. Eloquent speakers are so impressive to me!

Great article Em Lovs!, Thank You! ??- It's great that you are encouraging your tribe to speak up. You know by now how high a value I place upon all of our individual rights of free speech, and, more than ever now, we must use it or lose it, & the more voices, and the more varied those voices, the merrier, surely! ??
