Your Voice Matters- Author Lessons From an Author Helping Women Escape the S.e.x Trade

?? If you could peer into the minds of published nonfiction authors, what would you learn? That’s what the Impactful Author Showcase is all about.

The idea is simple: Read this and find the inspiration and ideas to write and publish a nonfiction book that elevates your brand and multiplies your impact.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Name: Doreen Omosele

Profile: Founder of Blossom Girls Outreach Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to outreach and rehabilitation for girls in the s.e.x trade. She is also a seasoned teacher, speaker and bestselling author, whose book ‘Purple’, is available in English, Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo.

Books Authored: 7

Fun Fact(s): Chicken feet are her favourite meat. She began working on her first book on the morning of her wedding introduction ceremony.

??? LESSON 1: Plan to have your book professionally edited and proofread.

After self-publishing her first book, Doreen realized that because she had done both the writing and editing herself, she missed several mistakes and ended up with a less professional final product.

“Thankfully, a kind editor offered to work on the book for me, and she did an excellent job.”

??? LESSON 2: Your voice matters, regardless of the size of your online audience.

Doreen said:

“There are many testimonials about my book, but one stands out.

In 2021, inspired by God, I set out to write a book for women in prostitution. Although I procrastinated, using my new baby as an excuse, I finally dedicated two days to writing it, 8-weeks before our brothel outreach.

We launched Purple at a Lagos brothel, and months later, a sex worker who had missed the event read the book and chose to leave prostitution. She contacted my NGO, and we helped her with financial support and training for reintegration.

Two years later, she remains out of the streets and shares how Purple changed her life.

What if I hadn’t written that book? I’m so grateful I did.”

??? LESSON 3: Writing a book could be your ticket to launching a successful speaking career.

It’s much easier for organizations and conference planners to invite you to speak if they’ve read a book that matches their message. Doreen discovered this firsthand when her first book quickly led to multiple speaking opportunities.

??? LESSON 4: Knowing how to sell your book is crucial for reaching more readers.

Doreen’s top book sales tips are:

  • Make sure your book cover looks amazing. People notice covers before they look at the content.
  • Start talking about your book while you're still writing it. This builds anticipation for your book.
  • Keep promoting your book even after it's published. If you don’t keep spreading the word, people won’t know how your book can impact their lives.

??? LESSON 5: Don't worry about your writing skills if you have a meaningful message for an interested audience.

“Don’t let the fear of not being a professional writer hold you back."

Write from the heart and then let an editor refine it. An editor can work with what’s written, but a blank page can’t be edited.”

??? LESSON 6: If you’re unsure your book will sell, you could test the waters by offering it for FREE.

"When I made my first book free, it helped boost my courage and broke the fear of whether people would read it. Seeing over 500 people download my first book was incredibly encouraging. You will have what you say and believe."
