Your Vacation Has Arrived! Here Are 6 Ways to Enjoy Some Downtime

Summertime means vacation time, which often leaves workplaces with a skeletal workforce.  This variable can often make it difficult on the leaders who are carrying the responsibility of meeting major deadlines, keeping customers satisfied and keeping productivity and performance levels humming along. Because of this, I’ve seen many leaders give up their own vacations to avoid the stress and backlash that a summer vacation causes. Please DON’T DO THAT! Take a vacation instead.

Employment site, Glassdoor took a survey in 2017 that showed 66% of people report working when they’re supposed to be on vacation. This is up from 61% in their 2014 survey. I agree that there are a variety of reasons for the lack of vacation, or working while away, however, almost every health professional who has spoken on the topic agrees creating a time to detach is vital to mental and emotional health.

Since mental, physical and emotional health is at stake, then taking a vacation should be a non-negotiable for any leader.

Take a Vacation! Here are 6 ways to Enjoy Some Downtime

On the way out…

  1. Plan Long in Advance – Although most workplaces encourage employees to choose their vacation time at the beginning of the year, statistics show, people just aren’t doing it. Planning in advance for your vacation also allows you and others to schedule projects, meet deadlines and help alleviate stress associated with taking a vacation.
  2. Have one “go-to person” – Whether this person is an assistant, peer, or team member, having someone hold the fort down in your absence can also give you the reassurance that things will be handled appropriately during your time away.
  3. Manage Your Last Work Week Before Vacation – Let others know your vacation plans so that they can plan accordingly. If you’re the leader, don’t wait until your last day in the office for people to get back to you with projects. Also, make sure you’ve signed, sealed and delivered everything that will need your attention a couple of days before you’re leaving the office.

While on vacation…

  1. Disconnect As Much As Possible – I know you are used to being reachable 24/7. You’re important. Your job is important. But what’s more important? The time you spend disconnected and relating with your spouse, children, friends or family members or having them upset because although you are there physically, technologically you are still at the office.
  2. Slow Your Pace – During the work week, you are doing anything but slowing down. As you rush from project to project, problem to problem or meeting to meeting, you walk fast, talk faster, and check email non-stop. While on vacation, take time to slow down and soak in some quiet moments. Leave your phone behind and take a bike ride or long leisurely walk.
  3. Take a Summer Siesta – Vacation is meant to enjoy loved ones, and take time out to enjoy life. It’s also a time to get some much needed rest. Go ahead, climb in that hammock and pull your hat down over your eyes. You’ll be glad you did.

As you prepare to head out for your summer vacation, remember to disconnect and enjoy your family members. The whole purpose for the vacation is to give yourself a break. Enjoy your time away. You deserve it!

Thanks for this reminder about the importance--actually the necessity--of downtime, Mari Carmen Pizarro.?Earlier this year experienced the kind of burnout that comes from not disconnecting from work from time to time--not a fun way to learn this lesson! I especially appreciate the tips you provided here for preparing for vacation so you can truly unplug and take the time to restore yourself in mind and body.
