Is your team strong and capable? Or too dependent on you?

EMPOWERED & TRUSTED

“I’ll take care of that.”
“I’ll just do it myself.”

It took being a leader for a while to figure out that when I was doing things that my employees could be empowered to do, that I was doing these things at the expense of their growth and autonomy.?

I don’t know why I felt for so long that I was the only one who could perform certain tasks such as putting in a work order for a broken piece of equipment or to adjusting the assignments throughout a shift when the patient census or acuity changed.

I’m not sure why it was hard to admit that my employees were better and faster at taking care of the majority of the operational issues and challenges that surface in any given day.

Over time, it was clear that day-to-day operations ran smoother when I removed myself as a bottleneck by investing time, energy, and support in my employees’ growth and autonomy. In fact, this sediment might equate to my definition of “leadership.”

While it could often be quite enticing to put something on my to-do list that could be on another’s or to jump in the middle of a conflict between two coworkers; It was in moments like these where I could stop myself and check my motivation.

  1. Do I lack trust in others?
  2. Am I (or have I been) unwilling to invest in others skills and abilities??
  3. Are my tendencies to “be in control” or “to do things my way” surfacing again??
  4. Is this a task that keeps me in the comfort zone of what I’m good at or like to do?
  5. Am I building dependence versus autonomy by doing this?
  6. Am I doing this to avoid doing other things on my leadership to-do list?

I truly wanted my team to be strong and capable . . . without me. My job as a leader was to create this within them . . . versus creating a dependency on me. ?

“We’ve got this boss.”?

Wow, the leader in me loves those words.

Best,
