When vision is missing (or not clearly understood) then confusion is the likely outcome for most teams.
For clarity when I say vision I mean - "An aspirational and inspiration description of what we would like to achieve or accomplish within a set period of time."A vision serves as a clear guide for choosing a course of action and direction of travel. And can be set for a project, a team, a department or the whole company.
When there is no vision people don’t know what they are aiming for, what good looks like or how to ensure the decisions they are making are aligned with the goal the team are trying to achieve.
The impact of which includes:
- Poor decision making
- Team members that are not motivated
- Team members that continually as “why?” or “so what?”
- Disagreements on the best course of action
- Uninspired and unmotivated team members?
What can you do about it?
Firstly vision creation is a team, you can’t just come up with one on your own and expect any team to instantly buy into it.
Step #1: Work Together To Identify Your Joint Destination
The key to creating a solid shared vision is to be really clear about what you hope to achieve. Remember, your vision is your destination. It is where you want to get to, it is not how you are going to get there, that is your action plan. It’s important not to confuse the two.
Step #2: Make It Big
To really inspire people the vision needs to be big. It needs to be something that seems challenging yet still achievable at a stretch so that it will call your team to draw on their best selves to be able to achieve it
Step #3: Know Your Why (your purpose)
Knowing the why of your vision is essential for people to get behind it. Why do we want to achieve this, Why is it important, Why should they care. When people understand and buy into the“why”, they will be more motivated to focus on the “ how.”
