Are Your Target Market Ready to Buy Now?
Digital media has given us an instant audience. We have information and products at our finger tips. But with that it has made the way we market to our clients and customers change.
As marketers we often feel we need to be everywhere and be marketing to anyone and everyone – after all our products or services are for anyone – right?
WRONG
There are over 1 billion websites floating around the worldwide web. With 50 billion businesses using Facebook so how do you stand out from your competitors? It has to be more than just a price war.
This is where your persona targeting comes into play. When we set up social media accounts for businesses we first send them these questions (note that depending on the type of business, we may send them slightly modified questions):
- Age
- Gender
- Job title
- Location
- Motivation to buy
- Where do they usually search online (websites and browsers)
- Are they the decision makers?
- Who are your competitors?
- What digital devices do they use to search online?
Now you can have many buyer personas but you need to look at potential warm leads and then the cold leads.
A warm lead is someone who will have shown an interest in either your products or the type of products your business offers. Warm leads have already ‘considered’ therefore they are potentially a quicker sale if you meet their needs. Once again remember this does not always mean a cheaper price. Sometimes they have questions about a product or service and if you are that company actively online, available to answer questions and give them more information then they will consider you a trusted source and be more likely to buy from you. We will call these your ‘primary personas’.
A cold lead is someone who is not looking for your service or product or may never have considered purchasing. These take a lot longer to convert into a sale as they will potentially need to be wooed, educated and inspired first. This takes time. As little as 7 points of contact is required to convert from a cold lead to a warm or qualified lead (a qualified lead is when they are ready to buy). These are considered your ‘secondary personas’.
So it is not to say that you ignore your cold leads or secondary personas but if you generate a sales funnel through your warm leads, you then have time to find and woo your cold leads.
Rule of thumb for marketing:
- Don’t try and be all things to all people. Find your ideal clients and concentrate on them.
- Marketing is a marathon not a sprint, don’t give up in the first few months it’s like going to the gym you don’t get results in 5 minutes but when you do get results it’s long lasting and easier to maintain than the quick fixes.
- Find your ideal social media channels and connect with your potential customers.
- Be real – many businesses hide behind a logo online. But people buy from people and they are more inclined to connect with a person rather than a logo.
- Testimonials and recommendations – the first thing people do when they are researching a service or product is see what others are saying. So make sure you encourage happy customers to review your business online – Trip Advisor, Google my Business or even send you an email and you can use it on your website and social media posts.
