Hey, it’s great to see you here for another Culture Junky LinkedIn Exclusive as we make the push to the weekend. The weather is getting warmer, the barbecue grills are getting fired up (if the weather holds up), and most important, those blue mountains on the Coors cans I was talking about on Wednesday in my weekly blog? Well they’re definitely blue now and perfectly chilled for the great weekend ahead.?
Today I wanted to talk about your story, and I know that for every person reading this, your story is going to be different. No two people reading this have the same life experiences or the same life stories, I know that. It’s exactly for those reasons that I want to talk to you about the importance of YOUR story, because in reality nobody else can tell your story quite like you.
Now you may be wondering what your story has to do with creating a strategic best-in-class culture, and that’s okay, bear with me and by the end of this I promise you’ll understand why your story is so important.
A dynamic story is the most powerful internal and external marketing tool you have.?When told right, it’s an absolute game changer. I use mine in interviews all the time for multiple reasons, specifically my origin story.
In my origin story, much like a Marvel superhero movie or TV show, the person learns about who I am, where I come from, and what I believe. They learn about my past and not only what made me the person I am today, but how that has impacted my business and organizational culture. I talk about how I felt like I was always on the losing side of the work-life equation, five days of work for just two days of time doing what I love with my friends and family. I emphasize how little that made sense to me, and with that they’re able to identify a similar feeling within themselves.?

Then, everything clicks, I talk about how through organizational culture I was able to make it so that not only do I enjoy all of the days of the week, but I’m also able to spend my time at work with people I genuinely enjoy spending time with.?
By the end, they’ve seen a problem they identify with, and they’ve also come to the same conclusion that I had so many years before - culture is the answer.
The gripping story that allows them to se themselves as companions on my hero’s journey is so much more than just ‘my story’ and so with that now I want to challenge you to get clear on your story. Not just who you are and where you’re from, but why you are the way you are, and how your culture has solved the problem for you and can solve the problem for them as well.
Your story and your journey are unique to you, so spend some time this week, refine your story, practice it over and over and over again, and I’ll see you Monday for another Monday Morning Culture Shock.
