The Internet of Things is going to be a less visible revolution than the traditional Internet. Most people are unaware that they are probably already a part of the IoT, whether through telematics in their car or a smart meter in their home. In the same way, a lot of the skills needed to power this revolution already exist; they just need re-directing.

So what skills are going to power this move to an all-encompassing IoT, and should you be looking to re-train now? 

Infrastructure Engineers – specifically ones who can predict loads on Infrastructure correctly

Network Performance Testing – Network application performance will need testing across all of these connected devices in all sectors

Business Analytics – The IoT is effectively just creating data. This all needs analyzing so Data Scientists and Engineers will be in demand, as will people who can understand how businesses can leverage that data effectively

Network Security Experts – How firms store and protect all this new data will be key, and anyone who can help test networks for security flaws will be in demand

Hardware Skills – Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems, Wireless Sensor Network Design, AutoCAD and QA Testing are all skills that will enable the Hardware element of IoT

Software Skills – UI / UX Designers who can turn all this data into visually engaging interfaces for consumers will be in huge demand, as will Big Data and Analytics specialists with skills in data sensor analysis, predictive analytics and platforms such as Hadoop and NoSQL.

Organisations are already investing huge amounts of money to cross train staff in these disciplines as they position themselves to take advantage of the IoT. It would pay to start thinking now about how your skills fit into this new technology revolution.
